Job overview

Reading Tutors

Contract type: Part-Time (30 hours per week and term time only)

Salary: £13.46 per hour

Contract term: Permanent

King Harold Academy is a superb place to work. Our pupils are ambitious and keen to learn and our staff are highly motivated, collaborative and supportive. We are always evolving and have aspirations to become a beacon of excellence in the sector.

We believe that learning to read well is one of the most fundamental aspects of schooling. If our pupils are not able to read at a level at least in line with their chronological age, they face greater challenges when learning the content of the curriculum. This is why we focus so much on reading and vocabulary at King Harold Academy. It has a generative power, and unlocks our pupils’ academic potential.

In order to meet these aims, we are seeking dedicated Reading Tutors, who will provide structured reading support to our pupils.

The Reading Tutor’s main responsibilities will be:

● To provide small group and individual tutoring to targeted students

● To support initiatives that promote reading for pleasure

● To encourage students to read widely around the curriculum they study

● To support explicit vocabulary instruction as part of the core curriculum

This is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in raising academic achievement and aspiration for our community. It would suit those with an interest and belief in the importance of reading and a desire to gain experience in education.

If you’re interested in building a school community that provides a transformative education for its students, then King Harold Academy is an exciting opportunity for you.

King Harold Academy also benefits from being  part of the Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT).

As an employee of TKAT you will benefit from:

● A wide variety of opportunities for professional development, including the potential to develop your career at more than one TKAT academy;

● Opportunities to work flexibly, where possible;

● Our support for your wellbeing at work; and

● The rewards of working to improve the life chances of our pupils.

Application packs can be downloaded from our website www.kha-tkat.org. Completed application forms should be sent or emailed to Mrs Campbell at michaela.campbell@kha-tkat.org.

About King Harold Business and Enterprise Academy

Andrew Jones - Head of School

King Harold Business and Enterprise Academy is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school in Essex serving pupils from the age of 11-16. The secondary school, situated in Waltham Abbey has approximately 630 students on record. It is part of The Kemnal Academies Trust, along with 40 other primary and secondary academies.

Formerly known as King Harold School, King Harold Academy converted to academy status in 2010 and was identified as good by Ofsted in 2016.

The primary focus of King Harold Academy is the continual development of teaching. Pedagogy trumps everything. It is our belief that when teachers love teaching students love learning. To this end we have take innovative approaches to developing teaching practice which is rooted in, and informed by evidence of "What works". Our philosophy of teaching is underpinned by Professor Rob Coe's statement that "Learning happens when you think hard". Together, across subjects and experience we work tirelessly and collaboratively on our pedagogy.

Because of our insistence on teaching that challenges, our students are; studious, hard working, resilient and resourceful. They know how to learn and they realise the importance of "thinking hard". Visitors, including OFSTED comment on students abilities to struggle and overcome difficult tasks; "Teachers ask challenging questions of pupils and receive detailed explanations".  "Pupils are challenged to think for themselves and explain their learning in a range of activities"
