St Patrick’s Primary School, Cessnock is located in the beautiful Hunter Valley area of New South Wales catering for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Surrounded outside of the city centre by verdant countryside, Cessnock is the largest town in Australia’s oldest wine region. The region is full of activities catering to various lifestyle pursuits and is less than an hour outside of the Newcastle CBD. A school of 362 students, St Patrick's provides a place, built on the Josephite tradition, where creative learning and the individual talents of each student and teacher is appreciated, embraced and encouraged. The school has a strong focus on community and is committed to supporting each individual student and teacher.



In the Diocese of Maitland Newcastle Religious Education Co-ordinators (RECs) are recognised and acknowledged as Religious Leaders for the school community. They are senior members of the school executive team and are tasked with the role of supporting the Principal in promoting and affirming the Catholic culture, identity and mission of the school.



RECs are practising Catholics who are committed to the life of their Eucharistic community and have an understanding of their Baptismal call to share and witness the Good News of Jesus Christ with students, parents and staff.



RECs represent the school and the teaching profession in the community, especially the parish. They are professional, ethical and respected individuals within and outside the school.



It is expected the REC will work in partnership with the Principal and Parish Priest in providing religious leadership for the school and wider community.
Position Requirements • Compliance with the Accreditation to Work Teach and Lead policy and will need to achieve accreditation at Category E – Accreditation for Senior Leadership. (within a time -frame specified at time of appointment)
Essential Criteria •Must be a practising Catholic who is committed to the life of their Eucharistic community;

• Demonstrate an implicit and relevant understanding of the philosophy and theology of Catholic Education, the mission of the Church through Catholic schools and be able to articulate this clearly to others;

• Demonstrate a high-level knowledge and understanding of the relevant Religious Education Frameworks and the Diocesan (K-6) RE Syllabus;

• Demonstrate capacity to ensure staff incorporate key understandings and appropriate methodologies in the teaching of Religious Education (RE) which will lead to students knowing the core teachings of the Catholic faith and how these are lived in the world today;

• Proven capacity to facilitate improvement in student learning;

• Proven capacity to identify areas of school improvement, advocate and systematically plan for the facilitation of professional learning and formation of staff;

• Demonstrate exemplary values and attitudes appropriate to professional practice;

• Proven capacity to build links between the school and its broader parish community in ways that foster the Mission of the Church;

• Demonstrate capacity to promote faith formation within the community by providing rich experiences in prayer, reflection and liturgy; and

• Demonstrate capacity to work collaboratively as a member of the school’s leadership team.

Conditions of EmploymentSalary is in accordance with New South Wales & Australian Capital Territory Catholic Systemic Schools Enterprise Agreement 2017. The position of REC at this school currently attracts an allowance of $15,982.00 p.a. (2 point position).

St Patrick's Primary School is an independent, co-educational, mainstream school in Cessnock, New South Wales. The school is located in the Hunter Valley region and caters for children from Kindergarten to Year 6. There are currently 370 students enrolled.

The school was opened in 1887 in St Patrick’s Church at Nulkaba by the sisters of St Joseph’s. The ‘Building the Education Revolution’ grant funded new facilities in 2012.

The school has a well-resourced library and computer room with 32 desktop computers and the same number of laptops and iPads. A multi-purpose room is available for creative arts, meetings and sports. 

St Patrick’s holds an annual school concert/showcase where students perform on the school stage in choir singing, dance, drama, verse/poetry recital and percussion bands.

Curriculum

The school follows the NSW State Curriculum. Maths is taught every day for an hour and students have a 100-minute Literacy block, five days a week. Literacy activities are also incorporated into library and computer lessons. Students participate in 30-minute Religious Education lessons each day following the Maitland/Newcastle Diocese Religion structure. The students have 20-minute library sessions once a week to borrow books to take home.
