Job overview

Residential Graduate Assistants - Sport

Fixed Term Contract – September 2018 – July 2019

St John’s College is seeking to appoint recent graduates to coach sport and to engage in the boarding life of the College, with effect from September 2018. Our preference is for candidates who have experience and expertise in one or more of the following sports: rugby, cricket, netball and hockey. The ability to coach tennis and athletics would be beneficial.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in an educational setting by contributing to the sporting and co-curricular programme of a leading co-educational independent school in the south of England. Enthusiasm, flexibility, the ability to work as part of a team, and a willingness to participate fully in a busy and thriving school are essential, as is a sense of humour.

These appointments are initially for one year, but this tenure may be extended by mutual agreement.  The post would suit a graduate considering a career in teaching, a number of our previous Graduates have gone on to complete PGCE courses. However, we will also consider those wishing to take “a year out” to gain experience after the rigours of academic life at university.

The successful candidates will play a significant role in the coaching of sport in the school, will assist with the management of school teams and the house sport programme and will be expected to contribute fully to boarding school life being attached to one of the school’s boarding houses. They will be expected to be available at all times that school sport takes place; the successful candidates will also play a role in the wider life of the P.E. department and may also be asked to contribute to other academic faculties.

Accommodation will be provided throughout the duration of the post and meals provided during term time; salary by negotiation. Application should be by letter and application form (this can be found on the school’s website - http://www.stjohnscollege.co.uk/Vacancies) to the Head of College, Mr T Bayley, St John’s College, Grove Road South, Southsea. PO5 3QW or by email to the Bursar’s PA (Mrs H Williams): recruitment@stjohnscollege.co.uk. The letter should outline why you seek the position and what you can bring specifically to the College.

Early applications are encouraged.

Further details regarding the College can be found at: www.stjohnscollege.co.uk or by contacting Mrs H Williams (PA to the Bursar) on the email address above.

Welcome to St John’s College, an independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 2 – 18, located in the heart of Southsea.

As Head of College, it is a privilege to lead such a unique and exceptional school. At St John’s College, we pride ourselves on the academic success of each individual student and our outstanding pastoral care. We are a Christian school but an inclusive community, welcoming students of all beliefs.

We are not selective by academic ability and are able to offer a rounded education, providing opportunities for students through an extensive range of activities. We are also proud of our international links and, as the only independent Boarding School in Portsmouth, we offer a truly international education experience from which all our students, day and boarding, benefit.

For me, one of the most outstanding aspects about the College is the quality of community spirit, based on positive relationships between students and staff. I passionately believe that we develop the talents of our students and create confident young people for the future, and this is a vital ingredient of our success. This ties in with our College motto – Per laborem ad Honorem (through work to honour), where all members of our community are encouraged to give their best in all activities.

There are many unique elements to St John’s College and you will get a good sense of our academic results, facilities and co-curricular opportunities from reading more in the different sections of this website. However, to truly appreciate what we can offer and to experience the inclusive community in which our students thrive, I invite you to join us at our next Open Morning or alternatively book a private tour.

The College was founded in 1908 by a Lasallian community of brothers and established according to the principles of John Baptist De La Salle, the patron saint of teachers. Today, although, we are no longer part of the De la Salle trust, we remain true to our Lasallian values, providing an education based on respect for all, quality relationships and an inclusive, collaborative community.

I look forward to welcoming you to St John’s College.

Mrs Mary Maguire, Head of College
