Salary: £19,619 per annum, Training Grade - London Living Wage

Location: Golden Lane Campus – Prior Weston Primary School / Richard Cloudesley Primary School

Working Hours: 35 hours per week, flexible between 7am – 7pm, all year round

Contract type: 2 year fixed term contract

Our School Caretaker Apprenticeship consists of a 2 year opportunity to build on your problem solving and customer service skills and apply your ‘can-do’ attitude whilst working towards a Property Maintenance Operative qualification. Following the initial application process, the successful applicant will be working alongside an experienced premises manager to learn about what it takes to manage and maintain a School within Islington.

The Job – Working as an Apprentice Caretaker you will:

• Establish good relationships with staff, giving advice and assistance, responding to repairs, damage and emergencies;

• Work showing initiative and taking responsibility for timely repairs;

• Carry out and ensure school cleaning frequencies are maintained;

• Move paladin bins, lift and move items around the school with assistance if necessary;

• Work outdoors in all weathers;

• Learn to demonstrate the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace;

• Work independently and as part of a team.

Training and Development – Within your role you will:

• Complete a Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship funded by the school. This will involve attendance at a college and/or completing tasks in the workplace (depending on specific course requirement).

• Join the Apprenticeship personal and professional development programme that will involve a series of varied development activities and events throughout your year with the Council.

Moving on

After you have successfully completed your Apprenticeship you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained a professional qualification which will improve your chances of finding work either within the School or with another employer or help you move on to a higher level apprenticeship elsewhere. You will have networked across the School and be aware of the internal job market during your time with us and we will provide support on your approach to the wider job market as part of your development programme. 

The School Caretaker Apprenticeship is ideal for people with excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to multi-task and the motivation to deliver excellent customer service whilst maintaining a school as part of a small yet effective team.

To apply for this role, you must:

• Be a 16+ Islington resident, Islington care leaver up to the age of 25 or former Islington secondary school student.  We encourage applications aged 16-24 however applicants of all ages will be considered.  

• Be unemployed/economically inactive (working no more than 16 hours a week).

• Not currently be qualified in Property Maintenance or Facilities Management at level 2 or above.

Closing Date: Midnight 25th September 2020

Assessment Day: Week of Monday 28th September 2020

Apprenticeship Start Date: TBC (as soon as pre-employment checks are complete)
