Reports to: Operations Manager 


Job Description - Main purpose of the post:

• To keep the school functioning effectively. Maintain the safety and security of the school and the grounds to a high standard. To provide an environment which enhances learning for students. 

• To support the Head Teacher and Operations Manager. 


Duties and Responsibilities will include:

Security of Premises

• Undertaking the responsibility of Keyholder.

• Ensure that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights and heaters are switched off after use. 

• Take reasonable steps to deter trespass on school premises and unauthorised parking of vehicles. 

• Carry out any necessary duties incurred with Intruder/fire alarm systems, emergency lighting and fire extinguishers.

• Basic understanding of fire safety and Health & Safety Regulations. 

Heating and Lighting

• To be familiar with the working of the school heating systems to ensure that the school is at the required temperature 

• Assist in maintaining a variety of records and monitoring meter readings and fuel usage – e.g external bulk gas usage/readings, septic tank levels and electrical readings. 

Maintenance Duties

• Take delivery of stores and materials, making arrangements for storing them and undertaking general porterage duties. 

• Carry out various minor repairs e.g.  unblocking drains and toilets, refixing display boards, painting areas including preparation – liaise with Operations Manager/trades as required.

• Other handyman duties as required by the Operations Manager/Head Teacher

• Ensure litter is dealt with appropriately and waste is disposed of

• Replacement of consumables (soap, toilet rolls, hand towels) – undertake weekly stock take .


Other Duties

• Keep all storerooms in a clean and tidy condition.

• To always maintain confidentiality in respect of school related matters. 

• The Postholder is required to be flexible as to hours worked to meet the requirements of the school. 

• Any other reasonable duties as directed by the Head Teacher/Operations Manager. 

• Outside litter bins to be emptied at least once or twice a week.

• Litter picking once a day after lunch or may be more depending on weather.

• Students can be messy and act without thinking and all adults on site have a responsibility for actively promoting the correct behaviours.  

• Carry out emergency procedures in the event of a fire, flood, break in, accident or major damage

• Provide for emergency access to the school when necessary

• Draw the attention of the Head Teacher to any necessary repair or maintenance work that is beyond the competence of the premises staff

• In the commissioning of external contractors to ensure that due diligence is followed i.e procurement processes, health and safety certification, other relevant compliance documentation etc

• Direct and oversee contractors and workmen when onsite and undertaking repair or maintenance work, and to check and inspect their work afterwards
