Job overview

The role of School Chaplain is a central role at King Edward’s, affirming the Christian tradition and ethos upon which William Capon, Rector of St Mary’s Church, founded the school in 1553. Whilst maintaining the school’s Christian traditions, you will be responsible for nurturing and supporting the spiritual and pastoral life of our multi-faith community. You will be visible and approachable around the school providing support and counsel to the school community. You will be responsible for organising and leading Christian acts of worship, which include Holy Communion, Carol Services, Thanksgiving and Remembrance services.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about engaging and enthusing our pupils on their spiritual and personal development journeys. You will be articulate and have the highest professional standards of conduct. Preferably, you will be a priest ordained in the Christian faith or have other experience that suits you to a chaplaincy role in a school with firm Christian traditions. In addition, experience of working in a teaching role in a school environment would be preferred. All subject areas and part-time hours will be considered.

King Edward’s has its own generous salary scale as well as a range of benefits including private medical insurance and Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

King Edward VI School is a leading HMC Independent day school for children aged 11 – 18. King Edward’s is a school with a long and distinguished history and it has been at the heart of Southampton for over 460 years. The School has occupied 4 different sites, relocating to the purpose built site on Hill Lane in 1938. It became fully independent in 1979 and co-educational in 1994.

King Edward’s is proud of its reputation for academic and co-curricular achievement and is a forward thinking, vibrant and dynamic environment in which to teach and learn.

We aim to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. The School has long had a reputation for impressive academic results but, while essential for future success, we also encourage pupils to develop a wide range of skills and interests. We combine the pursuit of academic excellence with a range of opportunity and challenge to develop self-confident and independent young people who have a strong sense of community and will become responsible and reflective future leaders. High quality teaching, a strong sense of belonging and the space to grow and achieve full potential is what we offer at King Edward’s.

The School continues to invest in its facilities and opened a new Theatre, Art Department and VI form Centre in September 2017. Over £20 million worth of investment has taken place over the past decade with a new sports ground and pavilion at the Wellington Sports Ground, an outward bound centre on Dartmoor, complete refurbishment of all classrooms and laboratories, new music facilities and extensive IT provision including the adoption of 1:1 technology for all pupils.
