Description

To provide literacy and numeracy assistance and support for students with additional needs at St Michael's Primary School, Nelson Bay for 23 hours per week. 


Position Requirements 

  • must have a competent level of literacy and numeracy;
  • must have an interest in the process of learning to read and understanding numeracy;
  • must have a cooperative nature and a kind manner and be capable of supporting children in their learning;
  • must be willing to support the ethos of the Catholic School;
  • must be capable of working under supervision of the Learning Support Teacher and Classroom Teacher .


 Essential Criteria 

  •  record Working With Children number on application. 


 Desirable Criteria 

  • experience in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder;
  • experience working with children with oppositional behaviours;
  • experience in implementing behaviour plans;
  • understands and implements non-violent crisis intervention strategies.

Founded by the Sisters of Mercy, St Michael’s Primary School is a medium sized, co-educational K-6 Catholic Primary School located in the St Michael’s Nelson Bay Parish within the Hunter Region of New South Wales. Current school enrolments are in excess of 300.

The school opened in January 1963 catering for 42 pupils and following a grant of 5.5 acres of land in 1969 a new school was opened in September of that year. A local benefactor donation of $100,000 saw the building of the school library in 2009 whilst a Federal Government grant brought about the building of a school hall that was completed in 2011. Staff with a strong commitment to ongoing personal, professional development is a key contributor to the schools’ ongoing success.

St Michael’s Primary School is set on 2.128 hectares and features a variety of classrooms, a library, a modern school hall, a range of extensive play equipment and abundant, spacious play areas.

Curriculum

The curriculum at St Michael’s Primary School encompasses Religious Education and the six key learning areas of the NSW Primary Curriculum. A wide range of extra curricula activities supplement the students learning in these areas, thus providing a balanced and all round educational program that allows all students the opportunity to achieve their true potential.
