Job overview

Director

The Jerusalem American School (JAS), established in 1988, is a leading K-12 1000 student school in Beit Hanina, East Jerusalem. The school is embarking on an exciting era of change, driven by best practice in international education. 2022-2023 will be a pivotal one for The Jerusalem American School as we begin to integrate project based learning and International Baccalaureate (IB) inspired approaches to teaching and learning, which reflect our mission and educational goal:

Mission

The Jerusalem American School makes education a positive change agent of society. We celebrate identity and unite people, nations and cultures in common purpose towards a better, more peaceful and a more sustainable future.

Educational Goal

We seek to realise our highest human potential, by cultivating appreciation for the values, traditions and aspirations of the people of Jerusalem, embracing the diversity of the world, engaging in a continuous process of spiritual reflection and committing to serving our local, regional and global communities. Young people emerging from the Jerusalem American School will become authors of their own destinies.

School Profile

The Jerusalem American School (JAS) serves a mainly Palestinian population of students and parents, of which a significant percentage (around 40%) have dual citizenship. The school is situated in the social and cultural heart of East Jerusalem.

The school was founded with an identifiably Christian character, but has always embraced students of all faiths and none. Students currently study a hybrid American system with an emphasis on Peace and Sustainability education and a focus on Advanced Placement (AP) as standardized assessments in Grades 11 and 12. Approximately 80% of JAS graduates go on to study at Tertiary level in Israel and Palestine with others attending Colleges and Universities in the USA and Europe. The language of instruction is English. JAS is currently pursuing authorization with the International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the IB Diploma program.

JAS is accredited by the Ministries of Education in Israel & Palestine (the latter regards JAS as an “international” school) and The International League of Christian Schools (ILCS) which has standards aligned with Cognia.

The school maintains a strong profile within the local community, and is highly regarded in terms of the quality and consistency of its programs, its international faculty and its leadership. Students and parents are proud to be associated with the school and see the experience of education as a pathway to tertiary opportunities.
