An exciting opportunity has arisen for a new School Staff Instructor and Head of Outdoor Education at Mount Kelly.
Mount Kelly, set on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, has a well-deserved reputation as a school with a strong CCF tradition, a robust extra-curricular offering, and an enviable reputation for the excellence of its outdoor education programme.
The Combined Cadet Force (CCF), Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme (DofE), Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race (DW) and Ten Tors (TT) are all hugely popular, as are a range of other outdoor and adventurous pursuits.
The role is full-time, term-time only, although some flexibility in working hours will be required, for example to attend CCF training camps and weekend training, and to deliver other outdoor activities.
School Staff Instructor (SSI)
The SSI plays a key role in the running of our highly-regarded Combined Cadet Force.
The principal role of the SSI is to facilitate, organise and deliver cadet training to all members of the CCF. The SSI is central to the smooth and efficient administration and management of the Contingent, assisting the Contingent Officers and CFAVs, and promoting the personal development of the Cadets.
Head of Outdoor Education
The Head of Outdoor Education is responsible for leading the Foundation activity provision to ensure an inspiring and motivating programme to further the educational benefit to all pupils.
The principal strands of the School’s outdoor education programme are the Ten Tors, DofE, and DW, though the successful candidate will be expected to be proactive in developing the outdoor education programme, exploring a range of opportunities for our pupils, including expeditions and further training.

The School has an internationally recognised coaching facility for swimming with a 4 lane 25m pool and an 8 lane 50m pool and has had alumni at the last five Olympic and Paralympic games. In 2022 Mount Kelly won the prestigious Arena League for the second year in a row, confirming our place as the top school for swimming in the UK. Our swimmers board and are taught alongside their contemporaries.
The College Chamber Choir is the flagship ensemble of the School. The group perform a wide range of challenging music from all periods and in a huge variety of styles, but mostly a cappella. They won the Barnardo's School Choir of the Year Competition in London in 2020, and compete internationally every year.
