Introduction

We are looking for qualified teachers who want to work in a calm and supportive environment in which people really do come first. With the wellbeing of staff and learners at the heart of everything we do, our teachers are given the autonomy they need to do a great job - in their way. You can expect to develop a positive and meaningful relationship with every one of our students with whom you will work closely - typically in settings of 2-8 students.

The successful applicant will also be responsible for designing and implementing the science curriculum for both key stages 3 (years 7-9) and 4 (years 10 & 11). You will have a passion both for your subject, for supporting the life long learning and wellbeing of the young people you will be working with and for dynamically meeting the needs of young people in your pursuit of fostering in them a love of learning.

Main responsibilities

  • Teach Science to groups of learners from all abilities across years 7 – 11
  • Lead on the creation of schemes of work to meet the curriculum requirements
  • Ensure that all lessons are planned with clear aims and objectives
  • Develop relationships with learners in order to support their needs
  • Engage and encourage learners to participate in learning
  • To encourage and foster intellectual curiosity
  • Differentiate tasks and strategies to provide bespoke support for a variety of needs
  • Support learners to progress towards personal and academic goals and targets
  • Work as part of a team to incorporate agreed strategies in supporting mental health and SEND and meeting the individual needs of learners
  • To encourage all learners to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets
  • Maintain registers, evaluations, academic and SEMH progress monitoring (and other records as necessary)

  • Attend all session briefings and meetings with Head/Assistant Head and staff to keep up to date with individual learner progress
  • Attend all safeguarding and child protection training and be aware of Inclusion Hampshire procedures at all times
  • To ensure that all lessons are delivered in line with the departmental schemes of work and school policies
  • To check that all subject matter is effectively communicated and understood by all groups of learners
  • To set appropriate learning tasks and challenges and ensure that it is regularly marked with constructive feedback
  • To ensure that there is a high standard of display work in the laboratory, which is changed frequently
  • To keep work areas tidy and organised to promote safety in the laboratory
  • To keep well up to date with health and safety issues through regular checking on CLEAPSS
  • To ensure that all experiments are trialed beforehand and risk assessment used with all experimental work
  • Adhere to Inclusion Hampshire policies

Person specification

Experience

  • Qualified teacher status (or (Level 4 or 5 Education and Training)
  • Successful teaching experience
  • Experience of applying safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures
  • Experience in embedding latest research in education, mental health and young people
  • Interest in keeping up with the latest research in education, mental health and young people
  • Awareness of factors impacting on and issues facing vulnerable children and young people and families (e.g. disadvantage, poverty, disability, mental health)
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • Knowledge and experience of supporting mental health needs
  • Knowledge and experience of SEND and Quality First Teaching
  • Knowledge of learning strategies and behaviour management and experience in planning and implementing

  • Ability to listen to and communicate effectively with children and young people
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with young people conducive to a learning environment
  • A passion for Science
  • Ensuring outstanding outcomes for learners
