Job overview

Key Responsibilities

1) Liaise with teaching staff and management to research, develop and prepare equipment & consumables for:

a. practical assignment work by students

b. practical demonstrations by tutors/the technician

c. externally assessed experiments

2) Industrially clean laboratory glassware and later redistribute to ensure appropriate stocks of glassware are kept in each laboratory/ready for use

3) Maintain teaching/preparation laboratories in a safe, clean state for completion of practical science, including in accordance with the college Health & Safety policies

4) Ensure equipment is kept clean, safe, in proper working order, and organised effectively

5) Support students in some independent research projects, including:

a. giving advice on experimental methods

b. assisting in construction of student-specific apparatus

c. preparation of/advance ordering of chemicals

d. supervising students in separate laboratory spaces

e. coaching students through all aspects of research projects

6) Independently manage departmental COSHH for all chemicals and oversee departmental chemical stocks including re-ordering as needed through college systems

7) Synthesise risk assessments for hazardous equipment in line with college policies and formatting

8) Monitor scientific assets in specific asset registers and collaborate with the facilities department to arrange servicing and repairs where necessary

9) Undergo training and train departmental staff where possible on new technology, including:

a. Anatomage® Digital dissection table

b. GC/MS

c. HPLC

d. Various Spectroscopy

e. Molecular Biology

10) Assist in preparation & running of extracurricular activities to ensure completely seamless operation, including:

a. Student interview evenings

b. External competitions

c. Open/community days

d. New starter days

11) Supervise students from other establishments during their industrial placements and train them on how to effectively work in a functioning laboratory environment

12) Attend appropriate courses as & when required, and take a full & active role in personal development, including:

a. Industrial updating

b. First Aid

c. Health & Safety

d. Basic Information Technology

e. Safeguarding 

13) To ensure that all other duties that are deemed appropriate by the College are carried out.

Hopwood Hall College is a further education college located in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. The college was first established in 1992, and since its founding has seen extensive redevelopment and modernisation, including the installation of a brand-new technology centre in 2012 which provides facilities for studying motor vehicle maintenance, engineering and brickwork. Although the college had previously contained its own sixth form centre, since 2010 Hopwood Hall has concentrated solely on vocational qualifications for school leavers, along with its extensive adult-education programmes. The college occupies two main sites, located close by to each other in Greater Manchester, each providing a range of high-quality teaching facilities.

Hopwood Hall College offers a huge range of subjects from entry-level courses up to foundation degrees, with part-time provision available for adult students looking to pursue their qualifications while working. In terms of younger students, Hopwood Hall begins accepting students at age 14, providing entry-level vocational qualifications and, potentially, apprenticeships for Key Stage 4 pupils looking to study outside of school. We have a purpose-built Salon, Restaurant and Technology Centre as well as extensive Sports and Animal Care facilities. Outside of study, the college also works hard to foster a sense of community among its students, playing host to a range of recreational common areas for students to relax and socialise.

They have established good links with community groups to engage with learners who have not participated in education and training for some time.
