Job overview

We are an Ofsted Good with Outstanding leadership 11-16 academy, with state-of-the-art facilities, based in the steel city of Sheffield.

We are delighted that in its latest report, Ofsted noted that ‘staff are very proud to be part of Outwood Academy City,’ and that our ‘staff appreciate the high-quality professional development opportunities they receive’ which we offer working closely with the wider Outwood Family.

Serving the bustling city of Sheffield, Outwood Academy City was constructed in 2011 with state-of-the-art facilities and joined Outwood Grange Academies Trust three years later. The school has undergone a huge transformation for its 1200 students, with an innovative curriculum and a personalised approach to learning enabling them to realise their vocational, practical, creative and academic abilities. This was recognised by Ofsted in February 2019, when the academy was judged ‘Good with Outstanding Leadership’. Inspectors noted that, “Leaders and teachers demonstrate high expectations for all pupils. They are determined that pupils achieve well in their subjects”.

We believe this transformation is due to our knowledge-rich curriculum, designed to personalise learning for every student, and our exceptionally high standards, helping all students to reach their potential.

We have won numerous awards as a school and are an IQM Centre of Excellence, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us. We are also proud to have been awarded the Gold Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

As we continue to improve, help to take us to the next level.

Join our supportive team where working collaboratively is the cornerstone of our department's success. The Head of Department has worked hard on building a team with a family feel. We are encouraged and expected to hold high standards not only within our classrooms but across the school area. Sharing best practice is at the core of department discussions in order to support everyone's development.  As a member of our team, you will benefit from a close working relationship with others in the department, where curriculum development is a shared responsibility, as the saying goes ‘two heads are better than one etc’. This means our students get the best in Geography education.

At Outwood Academy City our Geography department has a wealth of expertise, with two members being Vice Principles and two further experts at UPS. As a team we ensure our curriculum benefits from a wealth of experience and fresh perspectives, fostering a collaborative environment where every team member thrives. We invest in continuous professional development, empowering each member to excel.

Our vision is to enable students to see the importance of location in all aspects of life. To make this happen, we evaluate our curriculum, so it is aspirational and functional for students here in Sheffield. In Geography, our students embark on a comprehensive three-year Key Stage 3 journey. Beginning with two hours per week in Year 7, one hour in Year 8 and two hours in Year 9. Our robust geography curriculum revolves around core concepts: sustainability, human and physical interactions, physical processes, climate change, and development. We design our topics to exceed the National Curriculum standards, exploring local, national, and international levels. This foundation not only prepares students for our highly popular GCSE, following the AQA syllabus, but also equips them for life beyond the academy.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.
