Job overview

We seek a dynamic specialist in Geography and Social Studies to join a small but growing department in academic year 2018-19. The role would suit either an experienced teacher or a gifted younger teacher looking to take the next step in their career. The successful candidate will have an enthusiasm for geography and the ability to teach up to Cambridge IGCSE and Advanced Level. The ability to offer a second subject could be an advantage.

GEMS International Schools worldwide encourage students to be independent learners that will meet the needs of a fast paced and changing world. We want our students to have a strong set of problem solving strategies, the ability to think critically as well as the have the knowledge and skills to apply to new and unfamiliar tasks (be a risk taker). We expect that students will continue to inquire/question throughout their lives and have a strong sense of fairness towards all people.

GEMS International School of Pearl City, Penang (GIP) is a relatively new school opened in August 2015. The campus, recently built, has well-equipped and the latest technology for all subjects, with iLED and interactive screens in all primary classrooms and mobile access to lap-tops and iPads. There is a dynamic staff culture at the school with strong professional development centred on a supportive performance management programme for all staff including in-service and external training. There is an emphasis on the use of IT in a blended and realistic educational environment, achieving the best outcomes with varied approaches.

Since the foundation of the school GIP has been building an academic reputation, although we have students of a wide range of abilities who are nearly all Malaysian nationals with English as a second language, they are equally deserving of the highest quality of teaching to the level of their potential. The curriculum is based on the English system, and examinations are CIE IGCSEs and plans are in preparation for the implementation of Years 12 & 13 with an AS/A Level programme. Student entry to the school is by CAT4 assessment.

Malaysian work permits are usually granted for two years. Contracts are therefore fixed term, but continuity is important for the school; it is hoped that appointments will be seen as longer term, with renewal of contracts common in the school. The staff is predominantly expatriate for the English curriculum and they share with Malaysian colleagues, excellent training, facilities and resources.

We offer a competitive salary, medical insurance, relocation allowance and paid flights.

Applicants are encouraged to explore the school’s Facebook and website:

Candidates should apply to the school directly to the Principal, Glen Mundy at hrrecruitment_gip@gemsedu.com  with a brief letter of application and Curriculum Vitae. Incomplete applications will not be considered, and supporting documents at this stage are not required.

We will acknowledge all applications and keep applicants informed; we enjoy a high level of interest in our vacancies, but your candidacy is very important to us. Please also be aware GIP is a non-smoking campus, and applicants will be expected to be comfortable in that environment.

We look forward to hearing from you.
