About Role

The Librarian is accountable to manage the circulation of the Library resources and responsible for shelving and maintaining the materials in good order

Withdrawing materials from the collection (weeding) and assisting with cataloguing new resources added to the Library collection, in particular books in Mandarin is important as well as processing new materials and preparing them for use and repairing materials that have been damaged.

Knowledge of how to operate the library management system (OPAC) and supporting its use by students is also very important. 

The Librarian will be responsible for overdue controls and reservations, providing lists, reminders and follow-up.

Helping Library patrons find materials to meet their needs and Assisting patrons to become proficient in using on-line Library resources is required. Encouraging pupils and staff to use the Library through a range of activities (CCAs) also falls in the scope of the role.

Duties and Responsibilities

Main areas of responsibility:

  • Promotion and support for the academic ethos of the school.
  • Ensure that the library is at the academic heart of the school.
  • To engage with and support academic departments.
  • To actively promote our bilingual language policy and ensure both languages are equally represented within the library space.
  • To collaborate with the growing family of Dehong/Dulwich librarians.
  • To provide relevant support for our Accelerated Reader Programme.
  • To provide focused support for the high school through liaison with the IB coordinator.
  • To run engaging book promotion events.
  • To maintain a strategic overview of book usage.
  • To support school improvement.
  • To spend the library budget strategically. 
  • To create and deliver a library development plan.
  • Work with curriculum areas to provide and develop library skills training for all year groups across all subjects.
  • To develop library ICT resources.
  • To manage the library information system.
  • To manage the supervision of the use of the library and to select, train and organise pupil librarians.
  • To monitor and evaluate the usage of the library.

Person Specification:

  • Have recent experience of working in an educational/academic environment.
  • Be educated to degree level.
  • Have good organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Be organised, have a good eye for detail and endeavour to achieve high standards of service.
  • Be confident in the use of IT and knowledgeable as to how it can be used in the learning environment.
  • Be able to work well under pressure whilst retaining a good sense of humour.
  • Have an empathy with the notion of public service and in particular an appreciation of the importance of providing high quality educational services.
  • Have high personal standards of conduct and dress, and act as a role model for pupils.
