Job overview

Cheney School is a popular, high-performing school located in the heart of Oxford serving a diverse community of students who are eager to learn and to be challenged. You can read a welcome message from the Headteacher of the School here: Welcome to Cheney School

The school is part of the Community Schools Alliance Trust which is a small MAT with one secondary school and two primary schools. The Trust’s common vision is to improve every learner’s life chances.

We are committed to continuous professional development and have wide-ranging training and development opportunities. We are also mindful of the competing demands people face in their lives so are happy to consider part-time applications.

We’re looking for an inspirational and innovative teacher with a real passion for supporting students with special educational needs, to shape our provision and deliver outstanding teaching and support. The role is a key part of our whole school SEND focus and will involve delivering a bespoke curriculum to small classes of Y7, Y8 and Y9 students and extending and improving our whole school provision for students with Communication and Interaction or Cognition and Learning needs.

The role is suitable for those looking to move into SEND specialist teaching, or those with more experience who are looking to take on additional responsibilities. For internal candidates, it may be possible to arrange a one year secondment from your department into the SEND teaching team.

You will need to demonstrate that you:

  • are passionate about teaching students with complex educational and social/emotional needs;
  • committed to securing high levels of students’ engagement and achievement;
  • want to make a positive difference by going the extra mile for the benefit of students;
  • have the desire and enthusiasm to take a leading role in the development of the school’s provision for students with SEND;
  • have the interpersonal and leadership skills required to inspire and motivate colleagues and students;
  • be flexible and willing to teach across subject areas, and build links between the SEND department and subject faculties;
  • work with a range of outside professionals supporting the school’s ethos;
  • be keen and able to embed enjoyment and success in learning.

We are committed to continuous professional development and have wide-ranging training and development opportunities. This role could be relevant for those looking to progress as a SENCO or similar: both time and funding for SENCO training, or a suitable, similar alternative training/courses, can be provided for the right candidate.

If you would like more information about the role, please contact Louise Elias, Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion, on: LEL@cheney.oxon.sch.uk

Payment is on Qualified or Unqualified Teacher Main Scale, depending on experience, together with a SEN allowance.

Please note: to ensure we conduct a fair shortlisting process we are no longer providing any personal information, including the names and gender of applicants, to short-listing panels.

Closing date: 8am, Tuesday 11 May  2021

Interview: tbc
