Job overview

Wishmore Cross Academy, part of the Academies Enterprise Trust (AET), is a residential special school in Chobham, Surrey, for boys aged 9 to 16 years who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. We can admit up to 80 boys and can offer up to 14 residential places (including extended days) on a flexible basis for up to 4 nights per week.

We provide a highly effective and individual package of education, care and pastoral support to young people who may have had only negative experiences of school. A safe, caring environment supported by high levels of staffing ensures each pupil has the opportunity to make progress and achieve their full potential.  We are a good school with outstanding features and we invest, not only in our students, but also our staff by providing regular CPD opportunities.  The academy is situated within easy reach of the M25 and M3 and, although in Surrey, is very close to Berkshire and Hampshire.

We are looking for a passionate, motivated and dedicated Teacher with Special Educational Needs experience (SEN) to join our teaching team.  You will work with our young people and help them achieve the best possible outcomes within KS3 and KS4. We are passionate about Restorative Justice Practices and deliver a curriculum designed to re-build relationships.  The successful candidate will have passion for SEN and will have a creative, inspirational approach to delivering the curriculum in a number of subjects.  You should have the ability to teach both KS3 and KS4.  We have experience of supporting staff through their NQT year and we would be happy to consider applications from NQTs. We would also welcome applications from graduates looking for work experience prior to training to teach and we have a well-established Schools Direct programme.

The successful candidate will have a good degree and some knowledge of behaviour management strategies to support children, however, detailed training will be provided for the successful candidate.

This is a fixed term post to cover maternity from March 2018

All applicants are encouraged to visit the academy prior to making an application.  Please contact Greg Moss at gmoss@wishmorecrossacademy.org to organise.

As  the sponsor, AET believes that all young people deserve to become world-class learners – to learn, enjoy, succeed and thrive in a first rate educational environment with the best facilities, the best teaching and the most up-to-date resources available to them.  In each of our academies, you will benefit from visionary, inspirational and dynamic leadership and be empowered to develop your own skills with access to world-class CPD and Talent Management programmes.  You will also be entitled to the following benefits: a health cash plan, vehicle affinity scheme and childcare vouchers.

This position is required from March 2018. Interviews will take place as soon as possible after the closing date.

Closing date: Monday 29 January 2018.

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early should we receive an overwhelming response.  All candidates are advised to refer to the job description and person specification before making an application.

About Lift Wishmore

Lift Wishmore is a nurturing and ambitious school for students aged 7–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including Autism and ADHD. Currently serving 90 boys, we are excited to become a co-educational school from September 2025, with plans to expand our junior provision and grow to 120 pupils over the next four years.

Our vibrant, purpose-built campus — including a new junior building — offers a visually inspiring and inclusive learning environment. We deliver a tailored curriculum designed to meet diverse needs, with a strong focus on reading, core academic subjects, and engaging GCSE options such as Business & Enterprise, Food & Nutrition, and Art.

Therapeutic support is central to our approach. Working in partnership with Surrey County Council, the National Autistic Society, and using the Thrive Approach, we prioritise emotional well-being and holistic development. Beyond the classroom, students can access enriching activities including Forest School, theatre trips, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

We are deeply committed to community engagement, regularly hosting parent events, supporting charities, and working closely with local primary schools and organisations.

At Lift Wishmore, we empower every student to thrive — academically, emotionally, and socially — and to build a positive and successful future.
