An opportunity for an exceptional SENCO has arisen at a popular co-educational day and boarding Prep school in North Yorkshire, 12 miles north of York. Terrington Hall is a vibrant stand-alone Prep School with 200 pupils from 3-13, the vast majority of whom go on to the leading senior independent schools at 13.

We are seeking, from September 2024, a skilled and enthusiastic SENCO. With the support of the Headmaster and Deputy Head Academic, the SENCO is responsible for the development and implementation of the learning strategies policy for children with additional learning needs throughout the school, ensuring that the teaching and learning, achievements, attitudes, and well-being of every child on the SEN register matters.


Qualifications and Experience: 

•            Qualified Teacher with appropriate SEN qualification such as National SENCO award.

•            Demonstrates very strong academic and intellectual credentials with evidence of ongoing professional development.

•            Has significant experience as a SENCO or SEN in either the independent or maintained sector.

•            Demonstrates excellent knowledge of the National Curriculum requirements and children's learning processes; a proven ability to design and ensure the implementation of programs which enhance children's learning.

•            Has a proven ability to teach a curriculum subject along with a willingness to participate in the School's extra-curricular activities.

•            Has the experience and ability to use appropriate assessment and reporting techniques to monitor and record children's learning, and to provide parents with appropriate feedback on children's performance.

•            Willingness to deliver the PSHE/RSE program.


Technical and Interpersonal Skills: 

•            Demonstrates high-quality teaching-skills and expertise in creating a positive, encouraging and stimulating learning environment reflecting a strong commitment to the personal and professional growth of the children.

•            Demonstrates the ability to promote the welfare and protection of children within the school.

•            Has previous experience of leading and inspiring, or demonstrates the ability to lead and inspire other teachers in respect of learning strategies and interventions across all departments.

•            Demonstrates the ability to create a good rapport with children across the school, enthusing and motivating children with a range of abilities.

•            Demonstrates knowledge of the National Curriculum, children's learning processes and demonstrates a proven ability to implement programs which enhance children's learning.

•            Has the ability to use appropriate assessment and reporting techniques to monitor and record children's learning, and to provide parents with appropriate feedback on children's performance.

•            Demonstrates a capacity to work effectively as a team member with a proven ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and colleagues.

•            Demonstrates a commitment and capacity to contribute actively and effectively to a broad range of School activities as a member of the school community.

•            Is confident in the use of IT within the School environment, embracing new and emerging technologies to enhance the children's learning experience.


Safeguarding and the Promotion of the Welfare of Pupils

At all times the SENCO will:

•            Safeguard the children's wellbeing.

•            Provide a safe environment in which the children can learn.

•            Identify children who may be in need of extra support or who are more vulnerable.

•            Promptly raise any concerns to the School's Designated Safeguarding Lead and collaborate with other services as needed. 


Promoting the Health, Safety and Wellbeing of Pupils and Staff 

At all times the SENCO will:

 

•            Maintain awareness of, and comply with, the School's H&S policy.

•            Conduct, document and comply with risk assessments in their area of responsibility.

Training

Attendance at all child protection, safeguarding, Health & Safety and other relevant staff training is mandatory for all staff, dates of which are published in advance in the School Calendar.

The successful applicant will be subject to appropriate vetting procedures and a satisfactory Enhanced DBS with Barred List check.
