King's Academy Northern Parade has an exciting opportunity for a candidate to be appointed as SENCO from September 2022. Full time release will be given from the classroom to focus on this crucial role and you will be a valued member of the Leadership Team. As part of our commitment to internal training and development, KGA will support the right candidate to study towards and achieve the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination. You must be a qualified teacher. Where you already hold the NASENCO a secondment may also be considered.


You will need drive and passion to make a difference to our pupils with special education needs in Portsmouth.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Strategic development of SEN policy and provision


Have a strategic overview of provision for pupils with SEN or a disability across the school, monitoring and reviewing the quality of provision.

Contribute to school self-evaluation, particularly with respect to provision for pupils with SEN or a disability.

Ensure the SEND policy is put into practice and that the objectives of this policy are reflected in the school improvement plan.

Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of national and local initiatives which may affect the school’s practice.

Evaluate whether funding is being used effectively and propose changes to make use of funding more effective.

 Operation of the SEN policy and co-ordination of provision


Maintain an accurate SEND register and provision map

Provide guidance to colleagues on teaching pupils with SEN or a disability and advise on the graduated approach to SEN support.

Advise on the use of the school’s budget and other resources to meet pupils needs effectively including staff deployment.

Be aware of the provision in the local offer.

Work with early years’ providers, other schools, educational psychologists, health and social care professionals and other external agencies.

Be a key point of contact for external agencies especially the local authority

Analyse assessment data for pupils with SEN or a disability and use this to think strategically.

Implement and lead intervention groups for pupils with SEN and evaluate their effectiveness.

Support for pupils with SEN or a disability


Support the identification of and disseminate the most effective teaching approaches for individual pupils with SEN

Undertake day to day co-ordination of SEN’s pupils’ provisions through close liaison with staff, parents and external agencies

Co-ordinate provision that meets the pupil’s needs and monitor its effectiveness.

Work with staff to develop effective ways of bridging barriers to learning through:

assessment of needs

monitoring of teaching quality and pupil achievement

target setting - IEPs, or Provision Maps, PSP, CAF

keeping accurate records

Secure relevant services for the pupil

Work with Headteacher DHT, AHT, teaching staff and pastoral staff to ensure all pupil’s learning is of equal importance and that there are high and realistic expectations of pupils.

Work as the Designated Teacher for looked-after children - co-ordinating provision for LAC and post LAC pupils, working in close partnership with the Virtual School.

Inclusion and safeguarding


Take a leading role in our safeguarding team, making referrals, responding to MASH enquiries and liaising with families and external agencies.

Report pupil and school issues in line with the School’s policies for health and safety, child protection, safeguarding and behaviour management etc.

Disseminate good practice in inclusion across the school

Promote inclusion best practice and contribute to the aims and ethos of the school.

Promote the pupil’s inclusion in the school community and access to the curriculum, facilities and extra-curricular activities.

Prepare and review regular reports for governors, Headteacher and KGA and including information the governing board is required to publish.
