Job overview

The Bulmershe School are looking to employ a SENCO to lead our Learning Support Department. The role will be one that truly makes a difference to our young people and will involve identifying learning support needs across Key Stages 3-5 in a wide range of subjects, for a wide range of needs. You will be responsible for creating support plans for current and prospective pupils and equipping classroom teachers to provide effective support to our SEND students. You will also be in regular communication with both students and their families, as well as liaising with department colleagues and external agencies. 

Specific duties and responsibilities

  • Line manage all staff in the Learning Support Department, including regularly undertaking performance reviews and supporting professional development of the Deputy SENCO and colleagues in the department.
  • Establish common practices and share vision within the school’s learning Support Department to ensure high quality provision that meets the needs of young people with SEND
  • Identify, assess and set provision for all children with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities
  • Provide strategic vision for the Department
  • Raise standards of SEND student inclusion, attainment and achievement by monitoring and supporting student progress
  • Stay up to date with best practice relating to learning needs such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and ASD, along with all relevant areas of legislation relating to SEND
  • Advise staff on developing a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum to help SEND learners succeed on a small group basis
  • Liaise with Learning Support staff, Heads of Department and class teachers about students with SEND and, where necessary, refer students to the appropriate external agencies for further support
  • Engage in liaison meetings with appropriate outside agencies e.g. Ed Psych, Speech and Language service, ASC service, EWO; LEA etc. and to facilitate opportunities for external agencies to work with students and staff
  • Prepare and implement an annual department plan that will contribute to the overall School Development Plan
  • Provide exams analysis report on students with SEND who have taken public examinations and report to governors as required
  • Lead by example by being an outstanding practitioner

The Bulmershe School is a heavily oversubscribed school which sits at the heart of the Woodley community. We are a mixed, Corvus Learning Trust Academy school of 1,500 students aged between 11 and 18, who come from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Teaching is good and sometimes outstanding. Lessons are well planned and paced so that students are engaged in their learning. Students’ behaviour, both in lessons and around the school, is very good. Students’ very positive attitudes to learning contribute to their good progress in lessons. The school is a harmonious community with good relationships between students and staff. Students feel very safe and the school promotes their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development well.”
