Job overview
The SENDCO, with the support of the Vice Principal, will determine the strategic development of the special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) policy and provision in the school. They will be responsible for day-to-day operation of the SEND policy and co-ordination of specific provision to support individual students with special educational needs or a disability. The SENDCO will provide professional guidance to colleagues, working closely with staff, parents and other agencies. The SENDCO will be expected to fulfil the responsibilities of a teacher, as set out in the STPCD. While the SENDCO will have responsibility for the oversight of provision for students with SEND or a disability, teachers will hold responsibility for the day-to-day education and support of students within their classroom.
The SENDCO must be a qualified teacher and will have some teaching responsibilities within a subject offered at the school. They must either hold the NASENCo qualification, be in the process of achieving that award or be committed to achieving the new national professional qualification (NPQ SENCo) within 3 years of appointment to the role.
