Job overview

The Counselling Service is well-established at the College and enjoys good relationships with other staff at the college who refer students and occasionally use the service for consultation.

The successful candidate will have previous experience of providing counselling to young adults in an educational setting, or a strong desire to work in such an environment.

The Counselling Service comprises of a senior counsellor (who is responsible for the running of the service and for supporting and managing team members) a part- time counsellor and trainee counsellor on placement.

This small team works closely to provide the best service possible to students and staff, by all members contributing to continually evolving best practice and by monitoring client feedback. The counselling undertaken is mainly short-term and so applicants should be confident in, and be able to evidence experience of, appropriate approaches/models. The work is sometimes demanding but often rewarding.

The service adheres closely to the BACP ethical framework and all counsellors are required to have 1.5 hours of clinical supervision (external supervisors). Continuing professional development is expected and encouraged.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Scarborough Sixth Form College and have a positive impact on the lives of our students.

College Overview

Scarborough Sixth Form College is an open-access College, which provides general education primarily for 16-19 year olds in the area. The majority of our 1000+ students are full-time, and follow Advanced (level 3) courses from which most progress onto Higher Education.  The College has developed a very successful vocationally-related provision in a range of BTEC Nationals and we also offer a one-year Level 2 programme (our “Progression Year”) consisting of GCSEs in Maths, English and Science plus a range of BTEC Firsts.  Achievement at the College is high, and above national benchmarks, with outstanding positive value-added overall.  The College had an Inspection in December 2019 and was confirmed as a Good provider.

The College provides a pleasant environment in which to work, being set in attractive grounds on the edge of town. College campus facilities have been enhanced by almost £5 million investment. Scarborough itself offers an attractive coastline and beaches and is situated on the edge of the North York Moors, within easy reach of the City of York.
