Senior Science Technician
The vacancy is for a permanent full-time term time only Technician, to work predominantly in Biology department. It is essential for the post holder to have experience of laboratory operations, and is desirable to have some experience of working within an educational or relevant scientific environment. Knowledge of Health & Safety awareness and monitoring is essential, as well as the ability to prioritise and work to time constraints.
The science department at King Edward VI College has an outstanding reputation, achieving examination results of the highest order. All science teaching takes place in modern self-contained and well-resourced laboratories, most of which have been recently refurbished. There are 3 Physics, 4 Chemistry and 5 Biology laboratories, and to support teaching there are 5 excellent associated preparation rooms – all with networked computers for technician use. We have 1350 students studying Science, taught by 8 Biology teachers, 7 Chemistry teachers and 4 Physics teachers, with a team of 5 Technicians for support plus an Apprentice.
Holiday pay is included in the salary calculation. Qualifying service greater than 5 years will enhance the holiday pay element in the salary. The contract will include an arrangement for an extra 5 days contractual overtime to be worked during College holiday periods as mutually agreed with the line manager. All support staff are automatically enrolled with the Local Government Pension Scheme. There is an employee benefit scheme in operation at the college. It is compulsory for all members of staff to attend the annual open events in mid-October (which will be an evening and Saturday), for which there is a compensating college closure day/TOIL given.
