About our School

Castle Rushen High School offers a broad and balanced education to 11-18 year olds who live in the south of the Isle of Man. The school has a history of high academic achievement and also a reputation for providing a wide range of learning experiences beyond the classroom. In recent years we have focussed on ‘progress’ for all our students regardless of their prior attainment.

Castle Rushen High School is a fantastic, inspiring and fun place to work. Our watchwords are ‘Opportunity, Care and Quality’, principles we apply to all our endeavours, including induction of new colleagues. New recruits are quickly made welcome and become part of our school. Helping young people succeed is what we are all about.

About the Role

Castle Rushen High School is looking for an enthusiastic, creative and well-organised professional to lead our successful English department.  This key post will be attractive to anyone who is ready to lead a thriving English team.  We are looking for a highly motivated individual who believes in young people, is innovative and inspirational in the classroom, and is committed to developing the success of the department.

Through the implementation of the policies of the Department of Education, Sport and Culture, and Castle Rushen High School, the Subject Team Leader for English will:

  • Provide visionary leadership for the English Department
  • Promote the highest standards of teaching and learning
  • Effectively enable all students to make expected progress and to meet or exceed their attainment targets
  • Ensure the continuous professional development of all team members
  • Contribute as a middle leader to whole school improvement

You will demonstrate the willingness and capacity to manage an extremely busy daily schedule, in the context of providing leadership of a key subject area. In joining the school’s English team, they will be ready to quickly establish positive working relationships with its current members in order to promote the school’s ethos and to take responsibility for leading all aspects of their work. In addition, Castle Rushen High School provides opportunities for core subject leaders to be part of the wider leadership of the school.

You will match the enthusiasm of our pupils and staff to recognise that every lesson is a rich opportunity to learn. They will be passionate about their subject, and enjoy working as part of a strong team, setting high expectations of themselves, their team and the students.

If you are looking to join a friendly and supportive group of people committed to the success of the youngsters they work with, then this is the school for you.

Values and Vision

The school motto “Lhiat Myr Toilliu” translates as “Success as you deserve”. It is an environment with an ethos of positivity, progression and hard work. Its curriculum has been developed to meet the needs of students as well as requirements for the outside world with a focus on attainment and meeting goals. The school uses its six R’s to show the attitudes it expects from its students; it looks at readiness, resourcefulness, remembering skills, relationships that are positive, resilience and reflectiveness.

It is also a school that understands the important stages of students’ education it is dealing with. When moving from primary to secondary school, it is important for a smooth transition, which CRHS always aims to provide its students through strong working relationships with local primaries. It aspires to create successful learners who are responsible, confident and always strong and valuable contributors to the outside world.
