Teacher of Art and Design (possibility of middle leadership role)

Prince of Wales Island International SchoolBalik Pulau, Penang, Malaysia

We are seeking an experienced teacher of art and design to join our dynamic and forward thinking Arts Faculty for August 2021.

Art is a thriving subject at POWIIS, studied by all students in KS3, and with good take up at IGCSE and A level, achieving excellent results.  The Arts Faculty comprises art, drama, music and design technology, and the ability and willingness to contribute to the teaching of design technology would be welcomed, as would experience of ceramics.

In addition to dedicated, well equipped art and DT rooms, a drama studio and a suite of music rooms, we have a wonderful auditorium and exhibition space, and the team stages a range of  exhibitions, concerts and shows throughout the year.  POWIIS is renowned in Penang for the strength of its Arts provision, and we are looking for an open-minded team player, with a creative, flexible, collaborative approach to join our team.

For a suitably experienced candidate, a middle leadership position may be available, working with other leaders in the Faculty on a wide range of developments from curriculum mapping to trips/events, and from gifted and talented to internationalism. The exact scope of the role will be finalised once the team is in place, but will involve both driving forward new initiatives and some mundane administrative tasks. The role carries a reduced teaching load of 43/56 lessons over 2 weeks and attracts a POWIIS Grade A allowance.

Since the foundation of the school in 2011, POWIIS has built a significant academic reputation with excellent results.   Our student body is predominantly Malaysian, with international students from over 20 countries.  Entry to the school is by test and interview, and the curriculum is based on the English system, with students sitting IGCSEs and AS/A2 examinations.

POWIIS is a boarding school and consequently all teachers are expected to contribute to the wider aspects of boarding school life including occasional evening/weekend involvement on a rota basis. Experience of boarding education and independent schools is an advantage, but by no means essential.

Malaysian work permits are usually granted for two or three years. Contracts are therefore fixed term, but continuity is important for the school; it is hoped that appointments will be seen as longer term, with renewal of contracts common in the school. The staff are predominantly British, with a significant number of colleagues from around the world and a small number of high quality Malaysian teachers.  Our facilities and resources are excellent and there is low staff turnover; a feature of the school widely acknowledged and highly valued by our parents.

POWIIS is committed to the safety and well-being of all of its students. Those appointed will be subject to a thorough background check and must be able to provide up to date and full police checks/child protection certificates/criminal records disclosures covering all countries in which they have lived and/or worked for at least the last 10 years.

We do our best to acknowledge applications and to keep applicants informed, but the large number of applications sometimes makes this impossible, for which we apologise.

Applicants are requested to complete the TES online application form AND to submit a current CV with details of 3 professional referees.
