Job overview

Permanent Part Time Post (0.5)

THE POST

The College seeks to appoint a teacher of Biology to join a strong, thriving and highly successful team who work collegially to achieve outstanding outcomes for the young people in their care. Applications are equally welcome from newly qualified teachers or from more experienced colleagues. An ability to offer a second science at least to S1 and S2 would be welcomed. There may be additional periods available for a colleague able to assist with games but this is not a requirement.

THE DEPARTMENT

The department comprises the Head of Department working with a full time and part time colleague. The post arises from the promotion of one of these colleagues to a Depute role elsewhere. The department enjoys the use of four dedicated labs within our modern Clavius science building and has the services of a full time Biology technician. Resourcing is outstanding and there is a strong emphasis on practical work to support student learning. In 2017, the department achieved 70.3% A grades at Higher (100% A-C) and 65.8% A grades at National 5 (100% A-C) The subject is very popular but groups are always kept relatively small to assist with individualized support.

THE COLLEGE

St Aloysius’ College is Scotland’s only Jesuit school and is uniquely concerned to develop the whole person in line with its identity to ensure that its young people become ‘men and women for others.’ A highly successful HMC school, it would be the first choice for many within the Glaswegian community but we are not complacent. Consistently strong results at every level, some the finest music and exceptional sporting achievements all have their place but we are most proud of supporting, nurturing and developing the ‘magis’, that is the greater whole. It is an exciting and fast moving place that offers a vibrant and welcoming community to its teachers. Our young people are interesting, driven, supported and supportive and above all fun to teach.

St Aloysius' College is an independent, Roman Catholic, co-educational, all-through school for children aged 3-18, founded in 1859. It is situated in the Garnethill area of Glasgow, Scotland. Entry to the school is assessment-based and a limited number of bursaries are available.

As Scotland's only Jesuit school, St Aloysius' College embraces a distinctive form of Catholic education which places formation of the whole person at the centre of all learning. Pupils not only have their academic potential ignited, but are also taught to look on the world with empathy, offering their talents and energies for the benefit of others. The Green Blazer has come to symbolise the mission of the college, which sees pupils achieve academic success without losing their interests outside the classroom, taking on challenges with a sense of fun. The five elements of Jesuit Education - Intellectual Formation, Magis Curriculum, Religious Formation, Pastoral Care and Perspectives and Horizons - frame the Aloysian experience.

Values and vision

The curriculum at the college is planned to ensure that every pupil reaches their full potential. It is centred on strong academic, spiritual and moral beliefs to support each child as they progress through the school. Each pupil is given the opportunity to develop and achieve their individual objectives at a pace fitting their own ability and personality.

As a Jesuit school, development of the whole person is at the centre of all that St Aloysius' do. The five principal concepts of Jesuit education help to form the mission for staff at the College, and allow pupils to understand what is expected of them when mapping their journey in the Green Blazer.
