Job overview

Tes are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational Teacher of Biology on a full-time basis from September 2020. Both experienced and newly-qualified teachers are encouraged to apply.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the UK’s leading Catholic co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 3-18. At the College, there are almost 500 pupils aged 13-18, over two thirds of whom are boarders. The College is in stunning countryside, near the Ribble and Hodder rivers and the beautiful Trough of Bowland. Manchester is only about an hour away by road or rail. The market town of Clitheroe is 4 miles away, and we are 12 miles from the city of Preston. The Lake District can be reached in about an hour, and the Yorkshire Dales are even closer.

The Biology department is part of the wider Faculty of Sciences. The Faculty has a long tradition of academic excellence. Results at A-Level, GCSE and in the IB Diploma are strong. In addition to examination excellence, the Faculty is successful in a range of national competitions. In Biology the Biology Olympiad is open to sixth form pupils and years 9 (Lower Grammar) and 10 (Grammar) compete in the Biology Challenge.

The Faculty of Science currently comprises 7 full-time and 2 part-time teachers who are supported by full-time specialist lab-technicians in each subject. The Faculty has its own purpose built block with a suite of classrooms and laboratories for each science, prep. rooms and staff workrooms, all in the same area. Classrooms are well-equipped with practical and theory areas, electronic whiteboards and all staff have their own lap-tops. There is also a shared ICT suite with 24 computers. The College is fortunate to have its own observatory which is used for co-curricular activities. Classes in the Faculty rarely exceed 24 in size at KS3 and KS4, or 12 in size at KS5.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Actively promote the school ethos as set out in the Mission Statement.
  • A full teaching load.
  • Such contribution to the smooth-running of their academic department as is required by the Head of Department.

  • Provide tutorial support as tutor to a group of pupils.
  • Cover for absent staff as required.
  • Attend whole school events such as assemblies, school masses, etc.
  • Attend events such as parents’ weekends, Great Academies, etc., as required from time to time.
  • One or more weekly studies supervision duties.
  • One or more other weekly staff duties.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and hard-working with a high level of emotional intelligence. He/she will have strong communication skills and the ability to build good relationships with pupils, parents and staff. He/she will have a strong commitment to the College’s mission and identity as set out in the College Mission Statement, and they are also likely to demonstrate all of the following:

  • Personal academic credibility;
