Alleyn's is one of the country’s leading HMC co-educational independent day schools, committed to achieving educational excellence within an ethos of strong pastoral care and a vibrant co-curriculum.
Located in Dulwich, South London, with a separate IAPS Junior School on the same 30-acre site, the senior school has around 1,000 pupils, including a large and dynamic Sixth Form.
We are seeking to appoint a permanent full-time Teacher of Chemistry for our Advent term. This post could suit either an experienced teacher, someone seeking NQT status (full induction programme in place) or an aspiring teacher wanting to enter the profession (full training and induction programme in place).
The ideal candidate for the post will be someone who is enthusiastic and well-qualified and who has a real love for the subject and an ability to convey this to pupils. The capability to motivate and inspire (both students and teachers) is vital as well as being able to work as part of a strong team. They would demonstrate excellence in the classroom and contribute fully to the co-curricular programme.
The Chemistry Department forms just one part of the large and dynamic Science Faculty at Alleyn’s. Other subjects taught alongside Chemistry in the Science block include Biology, Physics and Psychology, each with their own specialist area and Head of Department, overseen by the Director of Science.
The successful applicant will join a team of six full-time members and one part-time member of staff, all of whom share in the teaching of the subject throughout the school to GCSE and A levels. There is a Second in Department who is also the Key Stage 4 Co-ordinator. The teachers are assisted by four qualified laboratory technicians.
All members of the department also play an important role in the pastoral life of the school and in the organisation of department clubs such as the Lower School Science Club, the Chemistry Club and the Alleyn’s Chemistry Society. They play a full part in the co-curricular life of the school, in particular the CCF, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, sport and overseas expeditions.
Examination results at both GCSE and A level are among the best in the school and a large number of students studying Chemistry at A level go on to study for University degrees in Chemistry, Medicine and Biochemistry.
