We are looking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic Chemist to join our Chemistry department which is a thriving subject area within the Faculty of Science and Mathematics. We are looking for a minimum of 0.8 fte for this post which would be approximately 20.5 hours’ contact time. The successful applicant will be expected to teach and contribute within A-level Chemistry and show a readiness to form part of our teaching team for BTEC Applied Science L3 National Diploma. Applications would be welcomed from both experienced and newly-qualified teachers.
Qualifications: Good degree in Chemistry or a related discipline, together with a recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS).
Experience: Current or recent experience of delivering A-level Chemistry and BTEC L3 Science qualifications to 16-19-year-olds is desirable.
Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of A-level Chemistry and BTEC L3 Science qualifications is desirable. A thorough understanding of the broader concepts appropriate to delivering A-level Chemistry/BTEC Science courses, and the willingness to develop knowledge of the topics specific to the exam boards followed at Collyer’s (see below). Ability to use practical science and information technology to support teaching and learning.

Within the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Chemistry A-level students follow the OCR A Chemistry specification and are taught in four hours and twenty minutes per week per teaching group. BTEC Applied Science L3 National Diploma students will follow the Pearson specification (2016 onwards specification) and will be taught in eight hours and forty minutes per week per teaching group.
The Chemistry department comprises four teachers of Chemistry supported by two Laboratory Technicians, who prepare equipment for class experiments and assist during practical sessions. Currently the Collyer’s Chemistry department teaches 150 first year, and 130 second year A-level Chemistry students. It is envisaged that our soon-to-launch BTEC qualification will be delivered to one group of 20 students in the first instance. The department produces excellent outcomes with Chemistry A-level students achieving results amongst the top 10% in the country. The Science Faculty has two well-equipped Chemistry laboratories, with a further six laboratories of multiple use. All teaching spaces have projectors and are well resourced with a wide range of relevant practical equipment.
The Chemistry teaching team follow a fully in-house resourced unified scheme of work comprising student notes, homework and in-class assessments. Contribution to unified teaching materials is strongly encouraged in all teaching staff, with responsibilities allocated for maintenance of materials under the direction of the Head of Subject.
Members of the teaching staff are also personal tutors. Tutors monitor progress and offer support and guidance to students during a one-hour session per week. The ability to contribute to the enrichment programme would also be welcome.
