We strive for innovation and promote warmth and friendliness while encouraging high aspirations: our pupils aim high and achieve well. MVS, in its fourth year, is growing and continues to establish its reputation as a positive, progressive, kind, and tolerant academically selective school.

We are looking for a full-time Teacher of DT who is an excellent teacher and whose fantastic communication and organisational skills will enable all pupils to progress while enjoying their learning. You will have a desire to continually reflect on and develop your teaching practice while becoming part of our school community and becoming invested in the future of both the department and the school. You will contribute your own strengths and skills to the department and school.

The Design and Technology Department

The Design and Technology (DT) Department is housed in a state-of-the-art studio and workshop that first opened in 2020 and continues to develop forward-thinking facilities. The DT Department comprises a creative design studio equipped with a class set of mobile computers with CAD/CAM software provision (Solidworks) and large-format digital output devices for pupils. There is an open-plan workshop bay, a projects area, an advanced manufacturing suite, a staff office, and a materials preparation room with store and staff-specific equipment.

This is a growing department that focuses on putting our design pupils at the forefront of the subject, promoting design creativity and advanced manufacturing, including electronic development, and generating enthusiasm for wider disciplines associated with the world of Design, Engineering and Technology.

Essential for Teacher of DT:

  • A good degree in a relevant discipline and a recognised teaching qualification with QTS.
  • Experience of teaching Design and Technology at KS3 and KS4.
  • Excellent subject knowledge and a passion for instilling in pupils a love for the subject.
  • Excellent teaching practitioner with exceptional student management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the flexibility to take on new challenges.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Commitment to and experience of using a range of teaching styles and methods, including workshop machinery and ICT such as CAD/CAM.
  • Comfortable in a practical workshop setting and experience of teaching/supervising pupils in a workshop environment and using workshop equipment.

Desirable for Teacher of DT:

  • Experience of Exam Board GCSE and/or A Level marking.
  • Experience and/or ability to teach Design and Technology at A Level.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • Work with curious and engaging pupils.
  • Contribute to a thriving department’s successes.
  • Teach in an inspiring workspace.
  • Take part in, lead, and organise extracurricular activities and trips.

Role of a Teacher at Maida Vale School:

  • To plan and teach effective lessons.
  • To maintain high expectations which inspire, motivate, and challenge pupils.
  • To use data to inform teaching and learning.
  • To use the school’s behaviour policy to manage behaviour effectively to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • To fulfil wider professional responsibilities, including being a Personal Tutor or co-PT, carrying out supervision duties, and attending staff meetings and school evening events.
  • To actively seek to extend professional development.
  • To perform any other reasonable duties and responsibilities which may be requested by the Headmaster.

The school operates its own pay scales and will offer a salary commensurate with experience and the nature of this role.

Staff Development

The school is committed to staff development, and the position will provide a good springboard for further promotion within the school and beyond. Weekly whole-school staff CPD takes place throughout the year; all members of staff are part of a Teaching & Learning Triad which meets several times throughout the year; all staff are encouraged to attend CPD courses. In addition, the school’s INSET days centre on Teaching & Learning, focusing both on expertise within the staff body and from external providers.
