Vision & Aims - The de Ferrers Trust

The de Ferrers Trust is a Multi Academy Trust comprising three Secondary Academies and four Primary Academies, currently based in Staffordshire and Derbyshire.

Our vision is to ensure the children and young people in our care have the opportunity to fulfil their potential through achieving highly, regardless of their ability or background. We aim to achieve this vision through:

  • Delivering a high-quality education for all pupils
  • Recruiting, developing and retaining high-calibre members of staff
  • Establishing and developing robust governance
  • Ensuring financial probity and viability
  • Developing a highly efficient trust infrastructure and central services
  • Establishing effective systems to support the sustainable growth of the Trust

About Our School

We benefit from a strong local reputation which is the reason we have increased our admission number to 410. Our expansion has been facilitated by the acquisition of a third site for our popular Sixth Form in the town centre. This has led to a re-organisation of our students, with Year 7 and Year 8 educated at the Dove Campus and Years 9-11 at the Trent Campus, which are half a mile apart.

We were delighted by our January 2017 Ofsted inspection which emphasised the outstanding aspects of our work, including high levels of progress and attainment. We value our staff team, and this is reflected in the wide range of professional development opportunities which are offered both internally and externally. In recent years, we have developed an international reputation for learning technologies, becoming both an Apple Distinguished School and Regional Training Centre; we provide a 1-to-1 iPad programme for all students in Year 9-Year 13.

The Department

The English Faculty consists of 16 members of staff: we all have different specialisms including Literature, Language and Media.  Teaching is carried out in a number of rooms within the Academy and there are well-equipped teaching rooms across three campuses that are officially designated as English rooms where the work of students is displayed for all to see. Emphasis is placed upon a lively and imaginative display of students' work providing them with a stimulating environment in which to learn.

Literature and reading are central to the teaching of English at de Ferrers, though of course, much emphasis is placed on writing too: students are encouraged to write for a variety of audiences and purposes.  Wherever possible, members of the team are encouraged to teach the full spectrum of age and ability.  Recent Ofsted reports commented on the “lively teaching which predominates within the area” and noted that the atmosphere in lessons is “busy and productive”. Ofsted also found that “Pupils make rapid progress from their starting points in all years and across almost all subjects, including English” and “In 2016, students made significantly better than average progress in English language.”

The English Faculty is well resourced with a large book stock as well as a range of audio-visual equipment.  Students are given ready access to computers and students in Year 9 through to 13 have the use of their own iPads.

For the external examinations, the AQA GCSE is followed in both English Language and English Literature.  At A Level, AQA English Literature A and AQA English Language are taught. Media course is delivered at both KS4 (GCSE) and KS5 (BTEC) by English practitioners and we are excited to add A Level Film Studies to our suite of courses this year.  Examination performance has been consistently good but we are always looking to improve! We are a strong, experienced team which nurtures new entrants to the profession and readily shares resources and ideas.

The English Faculty believes in providing students with a rich diet of extracurricular activities: there are frequent theatre visits and other external trips through the Academy available for students across all Key Stages. The team has also involved students in local competitions such as Spelling Bees and has initiated a KS3 Creative Writing Club. There are regular Book Fairs and workshops with external speakers.  We provide a fully enriched curriculum.

The members of the English Faculty have a high level of commitment and work very closely and successfully as a team ensuring that all students are supported to achieve their potential.
