Vision & Aims - The de Ferrers Trust

The de Ferrers Trust is a Multi Academy Trust comprising three Secondary Academies and four Primary Academies, currently based in Staffordshire and Derbyshire.

Our vision is to ensure the children and young people in our care have the opportunity to fulfil their potential through achieving highly, regardless of their ability or background. We aim to achieve this vision through:

  • Delivering a high-quality education for all pupils
  • Recruiting, developing and retaining high-calibre members of staff
  • Establishing and developing robust governance
  • Ensuring financial probity and viability
  • Developing a highly efficient trust infrastructure and central services
  • Establishing effective systems to support the sustainable growth of the Trust

About Our School

We benefit from a strong local reputation which is the reason we have increased our admission number to 410. Our expansion has been facilitated by the acquisition of a third site for our popular Sixth Form in the town centre. This has led to a re-organisation of our students, with Year 7 and Year 8 educated at the Dove Campus and Years 9-11 at the Trent Campus, which are half a mile apart.

We were delighted by our January 2017 Ofsted inspection which emphasised the outstanding aspects of our work, including high levels of progress and attainment. We value our staff team, and this is reflected in the wide range of professional development opportunities which are offered both internally and externally. In recent years, we have developed an international reputation for learning technologies, becoming both an Apple Distinguished School and Regional Training Centre; we provide a 1-to-1 iPad programme for all students in Year 9-Year 13.

The Department

The Humanities Faculty is a strong team of 12, well-qualified, staff teaching specialist subjects. Humanities is led by a Director of Learning, supported by a Lead Teacher and three Key Stage Leaders (KSL).  The Faculty is responsible for both History and Geography at The de Ferrers Academy.

There are well-equipped specialist rooms on both campuses, boasting an excellent selection of varied resources. It is Faculty policy to ensure access to new technologies, for example, all rooms have an interactive whiteboard, enhancing the use of interactive learning across the key stages. The Humanities Faculty is at the forefront of iPad use in the Academy. There is a very healthy “take-up" at GCSE and A Level in all subjects, with significant levels of improvement over the last four years. Students from the Humanities subjects opt to continue their education at universities in a wide range of disciplines.

This is a period of intensive curriculum review with a drive towards outstanding teaching here at The de Ferrers Academy following lesson structure based on research and the science of learning. Students choose their options in Year 9 to start a 2 year GCSE course in Year 10.

GEOGRAPHY

KS4 follow the New AQA Geography course which considers: The challenge of Natural Hazards, The Living World, Physical Landscapes in the UK, Urban Issues and Challenges, The Changing economic World and the Challenge of Resource Management.

KS5  We study AQA Geography.  Topics include Water and Carbon Cycles, Hazards and Coastal Landscapes and Human topics including Changing Places, Contemporary Urban Environments and Global Governance.

An independent research study is worth 25% of the students’ final mark. As part of this, students have a residential experience to develop their field study skills.

We also have a number of extra curricula activities, including a trip to Iceland.

A wide variety of enrichment activities are provided by staff including: catch up and revision sessions, the History Challenge, Environment Week, fieldwork at all levels, trips to Berlin, Hamburg, Chatsworth, and Derby University.

In Return

We strive to be an Employer of Choice and are committed to the wellbeing and development of our colleagues. You will join a supportive, warm and friendly community and enjoy an excellent benefits package, which includes:

  • Cycle to Work scheme
