Job overview

The Directors of The Gardener Schools Group have established Kew House School in the conviction that there exists an opportunity for a different kind of independent secondary school in London - academically demanding but with a modern approach to selection criteria, the flexibility of the curriculum, the shape of the school day and term and recognition of creativity and talent.

The school opened with 63 students in September 2013 and now has 520 plus. We opened for internal and external sixth form candidates for the first time in September 2016. The school will grow to full capacity over the next three or four years with circa 600 students aged 11-18.

The successful candidate will be a well-qualified and enthusiastic graduate teacher. They will have the opportunity to assist in further developing and building the Languages Department in this new school. This is a part-time post from September 2018 teaching point six or point seven by negotiation. The ability to offer an additional language, especially French, would be welcome.

Spanish is our core language for all Year 7 and 8 students. We also offer Latin, French and German in Key Stage 3 carousel and at GCSE, though a language is not compulsory. GCSE results have been excellent in all languages. A level uptake is now developing as the school grows its sixth form from the current 60+ to 160+ over the next two or three years. We expect most students to study a language at KS4 and offer Spanish, French, Latin and German. We offer all languages at A level.

Requirements for the position include:

  • a good degree in an appropriate subject and a teaching qualification recognised in the UK;
  • the ability to teach German to GCSE and A level;
  • a commitment to, and experience of, using a range of teaching styles and methods, including ICT. Classrooms are equipped with IWB/digital projectors. A VLE will be developed as a priority to support student learning;
  • offering extra support through subject clinics and revision classes;
  • a willingness to participate in the wider co-curricular life of the school.

It is desirable but not essential that a candidate might teach one or more of the following languages:

  • Spanish: taught to all KS3 students; at KS4 it is optional.
  • Latin: all students study Latin in KS3 and we have thriving groups in years 9, 10 and 11. There is a growing sixth form A level course in Latin.
  • French: all students study French in KS3; at KS4 it is optional.
  • German: all students study German in KS3; at KS4 it is optional. Uptake at A level at this time is small and we hope to see it grow in years ahead.
  • We offer a mother tongue programme for the above other languages as part of our EAL programme

Candidates are encouraged to explain in their applications other subjects they may be in a position to offer.

The school operates its own pay scales consistent with the national pay scales and will offer salary commensurate with experience and the nature of this role. There is opportunity to develop and take on additional management roles, academic or pastoral, for the right candidate, and we would welcome applications from those seeking to develop leadership experience in the longer term.

The school is committed to staff development and the position will provide a good springboard for further promotion within the school and beyond. All staff will be encouraged to attend INSET courses and will be provided with ample professional development opportunities.

Candidates are required to submit a completed application form, together with supporting letter of application and details of two referees. One referee should be able to comment on the teaching skills of the candidate, and one must be the current or most recent employer. References will be taken prior to interview. Candidates must provide original documents as proof of identity at interview.

Completed applications should be emailed to: officemanager@kewhouseschool.com or posted to Mr Mark Hudson, Headmaster, Kew House School, 6 Capital Interchange Way, London, TW8 0EX.

Closing date: Wednesday 22 August for a September/October start or September 10th for a January start.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by email or telephone and asked to attend an interview during the week of 27 August 2018.

All appointments are made in accordance with our equal opportunities policy and applicants should let us know of any special needs they may have.

Kew House School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and questions will be asked at interview to assess suitability of candidate to work with our children. All appointments are subject to satisfactory Criminal Record (DBS) check.

Kew House School is a co-educational independent senior school for students aged 11-18 years in West London, near to Kew and Chiswick. The school opened its doors for the first time in September 2013 with 63 students and now has over 550 on roll. It is the sister school to Maida Vale School, Ravenscourt Park and Kew Green Preparatory Schools and is owned by The Gardener Schools Group Ltd, a family company founded by Maria and Edward Gardener.

Kew House School takes a modern and pioneering approach to every aspect of school life. The key characteristics upon which the school was founded are:

Ethos and aims

Individualised attention both pastorally and educationally for all students. KHS benefits from having a smaller student roll than many independent senior schools and provides the flexibility needed to enable students to fulfill their potential.

Selection criteria

We seek inquisitive, intelligent students displaying a recognisable talent. Although we use entrance testing, greater emphasis is placed on interview, and feeder school reports. We select each year group as a whole cohort seeking a balanced mix of aptitudes and personal attributes.

Ethos

We recognise and enhance the individual abilities of each child, welcome students with varying academic profiles and place emphasis on confidence, self-esteem and creativity.  We believe this approach will produce excellent academic results. We operate a true “open door” policy welcoming parents and members of the wider community. The school has developed the feeling of a family and social hub giving emotional support and security to all students and employees, achievable due to its size.

The curriculum

We pursue excellence in all areas whether examinable or not. Our aim is to provide a rich and broad education to all students whatever their specialism. While we aim to achieve the highest academic results for each pupil we do not serve as an examination “factory”.  Our “Individuals in Society” (IS) course focuses on personal development, emotionally, practically, and intellectually, throughout each student’s life at the school via regular, time-tabled sessions and extensions of the school day.

Community involvement

The school is outward looking taking full advantage of the wide variety of cultural, scientific and business organisations in London as a resource for academic and non-academic learning as well as fostering opportunities for service to the local community. Visitors regularly hold seminars and workshops at the school.

Modern and Pioneering Approach

The school takes a fresh approach to all areas of school life and will not be bound by current conventions and practice. Whilst retaining the core traditional values in place at our preparatory schools, we have made bold decisions about curriculum, timetabling, the length and shape of the school day and term, aligning the school with the lives of students and parents.  The school operates as an educational and social centre for students in the evenings, at weekends and during school holidays when core, extension or one-off learning courses will operate and social events take place.

Creativity and excellence

The school exists to foster individual and group creativity in all areas and to allow talent to bloom. We encourage individuality of thought and self-motivation in all areas of study and exploration.
