CAMDEN SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

History Department

History, Politics and Sociology make a very important contribution to the good reputation of Camden School for Girls, and the successful candidate for this post has an exciting and fulfilling time ahead of them.

Currently there are eight sets of history, four of politics and two of sociology at A Level. We are responsible for the progress of around 170 history students, 70 politics students and 35 sociology students. As a consequence, the timetable for this department is exciting and challenging. We use Edexcel for history and politics and OCR for sociology. In year 12 history we study Stuart Britain (1625-1701) and the French Revolution - which is supported by a weekend trip to Paris. In year 13 we study Civil Rights in the USA (1850-2009) and give the students options for their coursework - including Mao, the Holocaust and WWI. In Politics we look at the political system of the UK before comparing it with the USA as well as looking at political ideologies

We are committed to demonstrating the importance of history to students in Key Stages 3 and 4. There are eight members of the department to do this, and we work together in developing schemes of work, appropriate sources and assessment methods, which are coherent, as well as attractive to students. There is strong internal competition to recruit students for the GCSE course, but History usually attracts around 50 students, making up two or three sets. The courses are backed by a range of visits to museums and historical sites, which we constantly look to revise and improve on. The department also supports Debating in both the main school and the sixth form.

We are a very busy department, but there is a strong ethos of teamwork and a great atmosphere of mutual support. There is a heavy curriculum load, but we cope with this by sharing ideas, plans and innovations. The new teacher would be well supported by everyone in the department.
