The role
The RGS History Department is an exciting place to be and the emphasis is very much on a forward-thinking approach to the subject. Each member of the history team combines historical expertise with a clear passion for developing new approaches to teaching and learning. Over the last few years members of the department have also been involved in writing history textbooks, appearing in television documentaries, contributing to museum exhibitions and delivering initial teacher training. The successful applicant will have drive, energy, enthusiasm and a sense of humour.
We want teachers who love their subject and want to work as part of a team to make our History department the very best.
The School
With its origins in the 13th Century, the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, was granted a Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1562. Much has changed since, but RGS continues to enjoy a reputation as one of the leading state selective schools in the country having been consistently rated ‘outstanding’.
We have high academic standards, excellent examination results and consistently feature as one of the top 60 state schools in England. Almost all students progress to university with 18–20 attending Oxford or Cambridge each academic year. We offer a huge range of co-curricular experiences, the extent of which is, I believe, unparalleled in the state sector.
Our innovative teachers deliver a high-quality classroom experience underpinned by our RGS Ethos of Learning. Exceptional pastoral care ensures that, in a large school, every boy is known as an individual.
We encourage all Wycombiensians to be self-confident, positive, healthy and enquiring young men who acquire the qualities of tolerance and respectfulness embodied through a modesty of manner.
Most of our students are day boys. Boarding, however, has a unique capacity to shape the lives of young people and RGS offers this provision to 70 boys as one of 40 state boarding schools. Boarding plays a substantial role within the life of the School.

Ofsted report
“The Royal Grammar School is an outstandingly effective college with specialisms in language and in mathematics and computing. Staff are fiercely ambitious for their students. The overwhelming majority of parents strongly support the school's drive to give students an outstanding educational experience. Reflecting the views of many, a parent wrote, 'This is a truly excellent school.' Boarding provision also contributes well to the students' academic success. Most feel very privileged to have access to so many stimulating out-of-hours opportunities.”
