The Languages Department at Salesian The Modern Languages Department at Salesian is dynamic, progressive and has Learning and Teaching at the heart of everything we do. The majority of our students study one language, either Spanish or French, and some study Italian. The vast majority of students take a language option at GCSE and given the comprehensive intake of students we are exceptionally proud of our results: 96% A*-C Spanish, 88% A*-C French, 96% A*-C Italian. All three languages averaged over 60% A*-B at AS and 80% A*-B at A2 last year. At Key Stage Four, we teach all three languages through Edexcel. Our aim at KS3 is to ensure students are being prepared for the demands of the new GCSE specification by introducing rigorous assessments in grammar, vocabulary and translation skills. This presents exciting opportunities for curriculum development moving forwards.
We are passionate about constantly evaluating and improving our pedagogy and consider ourselves to be a department that is eager and honoured to drive whole school change. Children are taught in ability sets throughout Key Stages 3 & 4. Italian, Spanish and French have a healthy uptake of students at both AS and A2 and moving forwards the new A level, which we have begun teaching for the first time this year, offers superb CPD opportunities for staff wishing to expand their teaching experience.
We employ Foreign Language Assistants in French and Spanish to work with our KS5 pupils at developing their fluency and spoken expression. As part of a Salesian school we are committed to extra-curricular projects.
Much has been done to raise the profile of languages in our school. We recently celebrated the European Languages Day with a European themed Bake Off competition across the school and will be entering Year 7 students into the Foreign Language Spelling Bee next year.
Foreign language trips to Italy, Spain and France are run at every Key Stage and we encourage our most able and talented through taster sessions at Surrey University. Passionate about instilling a love of culture and language; a highly successful Spanish Madrid exchange was run for Year 10 and 12 students in 2014,2016 and 2018. We would like to forge further links for a potential French exchange in the future. Pen Pal opportunities involving letter writing are also encouraged between our students and foreign links.
We are committed to teacher training and annually accept SCITT trainees to take advantage of our exceptional training and support. However, we welcome applications from candidates at any stage of professional development.
We are extremely proud of our department at Salesian and look forward to welcoming a colleague who is as passionate about teaching language as we are and who will bring ideas, energy and positivity to our excellent team.
