Job overview

Are you excited by the idea of a new challenge? Have you been involved already in the work of the MathsHubs? Are you a Primary Mastery Specialist? A Primary Maths Lead? An amazing Year 6 teacher? Involved in 5-8 transition? Would you like to teach for mastery in Key Stage 3?

Outwood Academy Adwick are looking to appoint a dynamic, enthusiastic and inspirational teacher to teach Key Stage 3 Mathematics. This is a fantastic opportunity for a teacher who really wants to make a difference to the lives of young people. Our single goal is ‘Students First’ and you will be joining a strong team of professionals working to this sole aim. We are passionate about providing quality teaching to all year groups, but your focus will be delivering a Teaching for Understanding curriculum to the Year 7 and 8s we have here.

The Programme

The NCETM and the Maths Hubs want to recruit further PM Leads to support the work of the PM Specialists. We already have two PM Leads working in the YHMH region with each of them working 1 day per week. We would particularly welcome applications from our current PM Specialists who have experience of leading TRGs. We would also welcome applications from teachers with leadership experience and demonstrable impact of developing teachers in Teaching for Mastery. We will consider applications from candidates who can offer from 1 day to 2 days per week for the role, dependent on your previous experience.

We expect funding to continue until 2023. After this date, the role will become a teacher of mathematics role. However, by then, your leadership experience would probably have enabled you to develop very quickly within Outwood Academy Adwick or the OGAT organisation.

In their PM Lead role, you will:

• attend the NCETM cohort induction day or face to face training days;

• deepen their own understanding and skills for teaching for mastery;

• work with cohort 5 PM Specialists so that they, supported by their head teacher, can develop teaching for mastery approaches across their school, using a range of professional development activity, including regular Teacher Research Group (TRG) meetings;

• work with cohort 1-4 PM Specialists, so that they can lead successful regular TRG meetings;

• organise the allocation of TRG schools to the appropriate PM Specialists;

• monitor the overall effectiveness of each TRG group;

• lead regular catch-up meetings with the PM Specialists to support them; and

• collaborate with the Maths Hub’s leadership and the other Maths Hub Mastery Specialists.

Outwood Grange Academies Trust provides a high-quality learning and cultural environment that inspires and motivates children. Whether you are ambitious for progression or determined to be an outstanding classroom teacher, Outwood Academy Adwick is the place for you. Leadership development, succession planning and capacity building are major priorities for the Trust as this enables us to facilitate rapid progression for those who want to advance either in the classroom or at a leadership level.

You will be well supported by an experienced team of teachers and Directors as you work to raise attainment levels and offer an engaging curriculum experience. You will be working with a fully furnished and very carefully designed Scheme of Work, with diagnostic questions already created for you, conceptual understanding built into the scheme already, thinking deeper tasks to stretch the most able and lots of problem-solving and reasoning.

The main focus of this scheme is that students learn the Maths by discovering the rules for themselves. No trick, no gimmicks! Beautiful, lovely Maths! This is the product of five years of all teachers in mathematics across the Trust collaborating and contributing inspired by the MathsHub’s learning and the MathsHub Shanghai teacher exchanges, of which we hosted one.

The Academy benefits from being part of the Outwood Family of Schools, which affords opportunities for staff to work and progress across several schools if desired. All staff are guaranteed a minimum of two hours CPD per week and a further comprehensive programme of professional development is provided through our own network of teaching schools. Our Executive Director for Maths, Kathryn Greenhalgh, leads Yorkshire and the Humber MathsHub. This, as well as her work with the DfE, means that OGAT Maths departments are helping to inform the development and mould the landscape of mathematics both regionally and nationally.

We have a great training package for teachers new to the Trust from NQTs through to HODs which includes: Teaching for Mastery; Open Classroom events; Maths Matters; TSST; Reasoning at KS3; weekly professional development time and further programmes free through the Outwood Institute of Education. We invest in you, so you invest in our students.

Closing date: Midday on 14 October 2019.

Interview date: w/c 14 October 2019.

We are an 11-18 academy based just north of the large, friendly, South Yorkshire town of Doncaster.

We have been a member of the Outwood Family since 2009, and in our 2023 Ofsted inspection the academy was graded Good in all categories. The inspection noted ‘the school has a supportive and caring culture. Staff build arm and friendly relationships with pupils. Pupils achieve their full potential. Staff are proud to work at the school’.

We offer a holistic education that makes learning stimulating, engaging and enjoyable for every student.

The inspectors were equally complimentary about our sixth form provision, with a wide range of courses on offer; including A Levels, vocational qualifications and T-levels.

We have also won numerous awards as a school and we have been accredited with the prestigious IQM Award, in addition to being an IQM Centre of Excellence for 3 years, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us. We are also proud to have been awarded Silver Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.
