Key Responsibilities and Expectations

 

  • Have an excellent knowledge of SEND and relevant legislation
  • Have experience of working with pupils with SEND, ideally across both Primary and Secondary phases
  • Produce, review and revise Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) in response to the needs of the pupils
  • Advise and support teaching staff in their role in implementing ILPs in the classroom, ensuring that sufficient information is provided to staff to do this
  • Teach one to one and small group lessons for students with SEND, focusing on literacy, numeracy or other key areas of need
  • Maintain and develop resources for meeting SEND provision
  • Maintain departmental records including:

 

  • Lesson plans
  • ILPs and ILP reviews
  • Test/assessment results
  • The SEND Register
  • Access arrangements
  • Departmental reports on students
  • School reports
  • Others as deemed necessary

 

  • Liaise with subject staff / the Pastoral team / house parents / parents or carers regarding SEND pupils and provide advice and support where appropriate
  • Liaise with, and use the expertise of, external agencies and services, in order to meet the needs of students with SEND
  • Ensure that staff are aware of, and are compliant with, the QE SEND Policy and other relevant policies, through training, support and monitoring
  • Attend departmental meetings as required
  • Attend pupil reviews as required

 

Desirable Skills

 

  • Have a Level 7 Assessor qualification to contribute to access arrangement assessing
  • Use diagnostic tests and assessments with pupils to identify learning needs, support learning and provide evidence for examination access arrangements

 

Curriculum Leader Duties

 

  • Contribute to whole staff training on SEND
  • Provide advice, support and training for individual staff on supporting students with SEND and ILPs, and on providing access to a broad and balanced curriculum with the use of differentiation strategies
  • Ensure high quality teaching and learning takes place for students with SEND within the classroom, through regular monitoring and learning walks
  • Carry out appraisals within the Learning Development department as required
  • Work with department staff and HOKS/ HOY on individual SEND student concerns
  • Understand external testing data and baseline targets
  • Work with HOD to monitor SEND students’ progress by analysing tracking data on school Excel tracking sheets, plus other trackers as required by the HOD
  • Ensure the department complies with all H and S requirements

 

Teaching Responsibilities and Expectations

 

The successful candidate will not be a classroom teacher but will instead work with individual pupils and small groups of SEND students. All teacher responsibilities and expectations still apply as below:

 

  • Plan, prepare and adapt materials for learners with specific needs and advise subject teachers regarding these needs where appropriate
  • Contribute to the teaching in your department across the full age and ability range as required
  • Be a highly motivated and proficient classroom teacher
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high standards of teaching and learning
  • Offer all students an innovative and effective learning experience
  • Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans that ensure the needs of all students are met
  • Identify appropriate attainment and / or achievement targets, differentiating teaching as required
  • Monitor student standards and achievement against targets, ensuring that relevant individual and whole school attainment / achievement targets are met
  • Plan and implement intervention strategies where improvement needs are identified
  • Utilise specialist skills, training and experience to support students
  • Establish productive working relationships with students, acting as a role model and setting high expectations
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all students within the classroom and the school environment
  • Teach / support students consistently, recognising and responding to their individual needs
  • Encourage students to interact and work co-operatively with others, and engage all students in activities
  • Promote good behaviour and management of relationships with peers and staff
  • Provide formative oral and written feedback when required, in relation to progress and achievement
  • Provide records of progress in the form of formal assessments (if applicable) and reports on the development, progress and attainment of students

 

Support for the Collegiate

 

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to the appropriate person
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • Support with student recruitment and retention as required
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the Collegiate
  • Attend and participate in regular meetings and directed time
  • Participate in training and other professional development as required
  • To contribute to school INSET if applicable
  • Assist with an evening duty (until 6pm) one evening per week
  • Attend Parents’ Evening and other relevant meetings
  • Represent the Learning Development department when required for Open Days and weekend activities
  • Participate in the school’s appraisal system
  • Promote the Collegiate and its pupils positively at all times
