The Post

We are looking to appoint a well qualified, enthusiastic graduate to teach Mathematics across the full age range to A Level in this academically selective school.

The post would be suitable for either a newly qualified entrant or a more experienced teacher.

Early applications welcome.

The School

King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) is one of the most successful girls’ schools in this country with outstanding academic results and a large programme of extra-curricular activity.  The school was founded in 1883 and counts the actress Lindsay Duncan and the BBC Correspondent Reeta Chakrabarti amongst its alumnae.  The school is an independent day school with 591 girls aged 11-18 and is part of the King Edward VI Foundation, which has nine schools in Birmingham. It is situated on a beautiful 50 acre campus in Edgbaston, which it shares with King Edward’s School.  It is only three miles from Birmingham city centre and has excellent transport access by road and rail (the University train station is only a 10 minute walk).

The Department

The Mathematics Department consists of five full-time teachers (including the Head of Mathematics) and three part-time teachers. We are a very successful department; about two-thirds of the girls go on to study Mathematics in the Sixth Form, with, on average, 20 girls choosing to study Mathematics and Further Mathematics. We follow the Edexcel A Level course, studying modules including Pure Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics. Last year 58% got A*/A at A2.

Mathematics is a vibrant and creative subject at King Edward VI High School for Girls. Girls are taught in form groups up to IGCSE, with all girls taking Edexcel IGCSE (4MA0) at Higher level. In 2017, 75% of the girls gained A* at IGCSE with 99% gaining A*/A. During Years 10 and 11, girls are offered the chance to study Additional Mathematics (OCR FSMQ) alongside IGCSE. Last year 18 girls (out of 81) chose to sit the examination with 56% achieving A grades. Mathematics is currently allocated four 35 – 40 minute periods per week up to GCSE.

Mathematics is an important part of the extra-curricular life of the school with Mathematics Fun Mornings, UKMT individual and team challenges and Senior Team Maths competition teams participating in regional competitions. Sixth-formers run a ‘Maths and More’ club once a week for the Lower school and are involved in mentoring students in the Lower School who require support.

The Mathematics Department believes in extending and enriching the experience of the students instead of accelerating through examinations. To this end, a creative and confident teacher of Mathematics is required to challenge and support our highly able, well-motivated students. The post will involve teaching a significant amount of A Level Mathematics and any applicant should be confident when teaching all aspects of the course up to and including Oxbridge preparation.

Application Procedure

If you wish to be considered for this post, please complete an application form giving full details of your qualifications and experience and the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two referees and send it, together with a letter to the Principal (no more than 2 sides of A4 please) outlining the reasons for your application, by noon on Wednesday 17th January 2018. Applications should be sent to recruitment@kes.org.uk

Interviews will take place provisionally in week commencing 22nd January. As part of the interview process, we would like you to teach a class; further details will be sent to shortlisted candidates.
