Job overview

A Teacher of Mathematics is sought for Southern International School Hatyai, a rapidly growing, co-educational, pre-school to age 16 Cambridge International School in the prosperous and friendly southern Thai city of Hat Yai. We have recently become an accredited examination centre for Cambridge International Examinations and have started the process of becoming accredited through the Education Development Trust.

Southern International School is a young and ambitious school with a ‘can-do’ attitude and we are looking for a teacher who can bring a love of Mathematics to the classroom, develop enquiring minds and inspire our students to achieve the best results possible.

The successful candidate would be expected to teach the Cambridge International Maths syllabus in Key Stage 3 including Cambridge Checkpoint in Year 9, and Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) in Key Stage 4 initially, with A/S and A level in a year or two as the school grows.

Hat Yai in Songkhla province has grown from a small but busy commercial town into a lively but manageable city of a little over a million, surrounded by rice paddies, forested hills and waterfalls. The tourist hot spots of Krabi, Trang and Phuket are easily accessible for long weekend trips, but there are several unspoiled destinations much closer to home. New upmarket bistros and restaurants are springing up seemingly overnight, adding to the cosmopolitan feel of this welcoming city. Accommodation is cheap and varied, from Thai-style houses to newly built, self-contained condominiums with shared swimming pools. Our parents are mostly from the growing young professional classes, business leaders and expat workers from the nearby offshore gas companies.

For overseas teachers we provide a housing allowance, healthcare insurance and a contribution to flights from and to their country of origin. We also provide scholarships for up to two dependent children. Visas and work permits are arranged by our liaison officer. The salary and benefits package is very competitive given the low cost of living here, and our current staff have a comfortable lifestyle in a safe, friendly city.

Before you apply, please look at our website www.southerninter.com and Facebook page. The successful candidate should:

  • Hold a first degree in Mathematics or a Mathematics based subject such as Engineering, plus a post-graduate qualification in education (e.g. PGCE); or a Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent.
  • Be a fluent speaker of English.
  • Be confident in the use of technology, both in teaching and in administration.
  • Be able to engage, motivate and support children, staff and parents.
  • Be a reflective practitioner with the ability to think creatively.
  • Be a positive and enthusiastic member of the staff community,
  • Be willing to fully involve themselves in the extra-curricular life of the school.

Responsibilities:

  • responsible for the development and management of the school’s Mathematics curriculum.
  • keep up to date with developments and publications in the subject.
  • promote the work of the Mathematics department regularly through the school website, publications and newsletters.
  • To produce and manage a budget for the Mathematics department.
  • To ensure books and other resources in the Mathematics department are maintained and replaced where necessary.

Southern International School Hat Yai is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to provide an International Child Protection Certificate if UK based, or the equivalent if overseas, as well as reference checks from previous employers. Any offer of appointment will be subject to the above checks being completed successfully.

Please apply with a full CV and letter of application, including the contact details of two referees. Unless you specify otherwise, we will contact the referees of all shortlisted candidates. Please apply to the Headteacher at hr@southerninter.com

About Southern International School HatYai

The Southern International School Hat Yai was established in 2015 to serve the needs of both Thai nationals and expatriates in the region who wish their children to have a broad and balanced international education. School enrolment currently stands at approximately 190 students with classes ranging from Early Years to Year 11. The Primary section follows the International Primary Curriculum whilst the curriculum for Years 7-11 is based on the National Curriculum of England and follows Cambridge Secondary 1 and IGCSE.

In June 2019 we were awarded the  ISQM Silver accreditation, a massive achievement for such a young school. Our report describes us a '"good school" and notes that "Students' personal development and the school's partnership with parents are outstanding." It adds, "Teachers' subject knowledge is outstanding" and "Teachers plan lessons that are exciting and interesting."

At a recent marketing event we had a tremendous amount of support from our  current parents, who spoke openly to prospective parents about the trust they placed in our school and the amount of individual care and attention paid to their children by our teaching staff. The students feel nurtured, cared for and have many opportunities to learn 21st Century skills and eternal values. We are a happy school. Please look at our Facebook page to get a feel for our culture.

As a young school we are looking for people who are not only excellent teachers but  also willing to contribute to the overall development of the school over the coming years as we make innovation, creativity, integrity, development and professionalism the core values of everyone working at the school. If you would like to be part of a team working together in a professional and collegiate environment then this is the school for you. We are happy for any shortlisted candidate to communicate with our current teachers to get their perspective on living in Hat Yai and working at SIH.
