Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a successful music teacher to work across both, Queen Mary's Grammar School and Queen Mary's High School, as part of a collaborative arrangement which ensures that music remains at the heart of both school communities. This is a full time post but applicants seeking job share arrangements are welcome to apply.

The successful applicant will teach in both schools, spending around half the week in each. The Director of Music for the Queen Mary’s Schools will lead both Music Departments.

Candidates should be eager to contribute to the academic and flourishing extra-curricular lives of both schools; experience in choral directing and a high level of piano proficiency would be an advantage.

This post provides the opportunity to teach highly motivated and talented students in two schools and to experience the rich and diverse school communities that both schools cultivate.

In return the schools offer:

  • the opportunity to teach well motivated and high achieving students in these selective schools;
  • extensive ICT resources;
  • a comprehensive mentoring and development programme;
  • involvement in the rich and varied extra-curricular activities of the school.

Queen Mary’s High School takes great pride in its:

Academic Excellence

Year on year our students achieve of their very best, ably supported by staff whose focus is enabling them to demonstrate their understanding and ability.  Teaching concentrates on meeting the needs of each individual as we recognise the uniqueness of each one of our students. We adapt our lessons to ensure that learning is both effective and enjoyable.

We take pride in the achievement of each student and celebrate with them in their success.

A wide ranging extra-curricular programme

‘All work and no play make Jane a dull girl’ is a deviation from the original saying but is wholly applicable to the extra-curricular provision at Queen Mary’s High School.

The variety of trips and visits is extensive and enables our students to develop a wide range of transferrable skills which will equip them for their lifelong pursuit of learning and success.

There are many additional activities on offer which are linked to the curriculum.  Theatre trips, lectures at local universities, study trips (for example to Auschwitz), fieldwork in Geography and Biology as well as the opportunity to perform with the choirs and orchestra.  There are a number of trips abroad which have a subject focus: these have included Iceland, Sicily and the Battlefields of Northern France and Belgium. In addition our annual ski trip is a popular feature on the calendar which always attracts great interest from students from all year groups.

Exceptional care for the individual

The individual needs of our students drive our planning and provision. Lessons provide opportunities for developing teamwork, leadership, cooperation, listening and a variety of other transferrable skills.  A key element for success is enjoyment and you would see plenty of that at Queen Mary’s High School.

We are a very happy school where pupils are able to balance their academic and social lives well. Our aim is to ensure that all students’ abilities are stretched to the full and that they find the tasks they are set challenging from whatever level they approach them.

High quality and committed staff

Our staff are highly talented and have the ability to ensure that our students can excel.  We have a blend of experience and innovation which makes sure that the learning experiences provided are both innovative as well as being focussed on the various assessment processes that are in place.

Our extensive extra-curricular programme is a testament to the commitment of staff who are keen to extend their provision well beyond their teaching role.  We are grateful to them as they continue to give above and beyond expectations and to enrich the experience of our students.

A family oriented environment

Queen Mary’s High School has a unique learning environment where students and staff forge positive relationships based on respect and courtesy. Staff are able to see their students grow and flourish and enjoy celebrating with them when they achieve success. Visitors and newcomers to the school comment on our supportive friendly family atmosphere. We value the positive relationships which we have with our parents, and we provide various mechanisms to help parents support their child’s learning.
