Cokethorpe School seek to appoint an innovative, energetic and motivated teacher of Music. The role would suit a newly qualified teacher or a more experienced teacher to join a supportive, well resourced and extremely successful department.
Music is taught to all students in First and Second Form (Year 7 and 8) and is optional in Third Form (Year 9). It is a popular subject and enjoys great success at examination level and in extra-curricular pursuits. The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in the teaching of the subject across all of the age ranges up to and including A Level. We currently follow the Edexcel syllabus for both GCSE and A Level and experience of teaching these specifications is desirable. A commitment to extra-curricular activities is expected.
We are looking to appoint a passionate, organised and dedicated musician, able to excite and inspire pupils in their learning. Excellent subject knowledge is essential for this role as well as a commitment to sharing with, and instilling in the pupils a passion for Music. The successful candidate will join a busy, thriving department and will be familiar and able to cope with teaching across a wide ability and age range. A genuine interest in extra-curricular music is essential as the appointment demands involvement with the busy programme of concerts throughout the year.
The Music Department
The department features two classrooms which double as rehearsal spaces for the major ensembles. The Mac Suite features 20 iMacs all running the latest editions of Sibelius and Logic Pro music editing software which has been updated this year. The school has a large, versatile performance space ‘The Shed’ theatre where many of our larger concerts take place as well as the wooden-panelled Corinthian Room where smaller lunchtime and evening recitals are held.
The department comprises the Director of Music, Assistant Director of Music and Teacher of Music as well as a full-time Head of Jazz and a team of eighteen hardworking peripatetic music teachers. The department runs a busy programme of events and concerts throughout the year. Introduced this year was a highly successful Young Music of the Year competition with a wide range of pupils taking part throughout the school. The school Choir regularly sing Evensong in the Chapel as well as singing for the school Advent services in St Mary’s Church in Witney. The department also has a strong pop and jazz following with many pupils attending the Saturday morning Arts Academy as well as performing in regular informal student led concerts. The department is currently planning a trip to Paris in July 2019 which will include the Choir and Orchestra.
