Thank you for your interest in this post, at the Community College and lead school in the Thomas Estley Learning Alliance. Please find below some information regarding the college and this post. You will also find extra information on our college website at www.thomasestley.org.uk and on the OFSTED website. We hope that you will find the information of value in considering and, if appropriate, making your application.

Physical Education at the College

Physical Education is a key subject within the Thomas Estley curriculum, and one of our core subjects at KS3 and KS4. Our results in PE have been outstanding over a period of many years and among the very best KS3 results in the county. The PE Department comprises four teachers and is housed within our PE and Performing Arts Faculty. We have an extensive outdoor field area comprising 4 football pitches and a 400m Athletics track. 3 Netball courts and 4 Tennis Courts which have recently been resurfaced and our Gym floor has also recently been re-laid. We also have access to a large sports hall and a 3G pitch at the adjoining Leisure Centre.

At KS3 students have 2 core PE lessons a week studying practical activities including games and fitness these lead into KS4 exam subjects. Additional provision at KS3 includes our Sports Education programme which students can opt to study for a further 2 lessons a week in Year 9, here the focus is on Sports Leadership and officiating. At KS4 all students take part in one core PE lesson a week of recreational sport and we also offer both GCSE PE and the Cambridge National Sports Studies Course which are both under the OCR exam board.

Extra Curricular plays a huge part in our programme. Competitive fixtures in local leagues, County Competitions and National competitions have seen much success. This has included double National Girls Football Titles in football and many County Titles. We also have lots of popular non-competitive clubs at break, lunchtimes and after school for students to access.

Both our Sports Education and Sports Studies students are actively involved in leadership and officiating activities within our Family of primary schools and we regularly host tournaments for them. Throughout the college we aim for a high quality learning experience for all of our pupils, with close links with all partner schools, particularly within our Multi Academy Trust, Success AT.

Mathematics at the College

Mathematics is a key subject within the Thomas Estley curriculum, and one of our core subjects at KS3 and KS4.

Our Mathematics department comprises 6 teachers, as well as a dedicated Numeracy Support Assistant. The Mathematics curriculum incorporates mainly classroom-based lessons as well as access to interactive Maths IT based resources and a set of tightly focussed intervention lessons / extracurricular support where appropriate. Students study Maths for five lessons a week (four lessons a week in Year Nine) from Year Seven to Year Eleven, as well as through our Money Matters Module in Year Nine. Additional provision includes studying for the AQA Level 2 qualification in Further Maths for our more able KS4 pupils, a residential Maths / Science trip to Geneva and a range of enhanced opportunities from the UK Maths Challenge through a Bletchley Park coding visit to Maths leadership opportunities in feeder primary schools.

Thomas Estley Community College is currently a thriving, well-established Leicestershire 11-16 Community College, with around 900 students on roll, and very strong links with primary and secondary partners. We are leading member of many local networks, including Learning South Leicestershire and county wide groups, we have a high local and national profile.

The College is very strongly committed in principle and practice to its role as a Community College, including adult learning, before and after school clubs and an onsite preschool. We are proud to have received many awards for excellent practice, we regularly welcome local, national visitors, and our practice in leading training, from Initial Teacher Training to middle and senior leadership level, is well embedded.

  • Leaders are passionate about ensuring that the school is inclusive for all. They work hard to make all pupils welcome.
  • All teachers receive professional development that balances their individual needs with those of the school. Teachers who are still relatively new to the profession feel well supported, both with their teaching and their pastoral responsibilities.
