Job overview

We have a vacancy for a full-time Teacher of Physics to teach up to ‘A’ Level to cover maternity leave from 16 October 2023 (ie. one week before half term). They will also make a contribution to the lower school teaching of General Science; and also assist with extracurricular activities in Science.

Our ideal candidate would be someone who can take a broad view of Science and develop in pupils not only an understanding of the principles of Science, but also an appreciation of its impact on the world.

A willingness to contribute to the wider life of this happy and successful boarding school is essential. In addition to teaching, additional duties and responsibilities will include a Registration (Adviser) Group.

The Science Department

  • The Science Department comprises seven teaching staff, assisted by two technicians.
  • We have six purpose-built laboratories with offices, stores and prep rooms occupying both floors of our Science Block.
  • The Department provides a broad range of extracurricular activities such as “Science Club option”  for all years, robotics and residential Sixth Form Biology field trip, to name a few.

Curriculum

All pupils study Science up to Year 11. The course broadly follows the national Curriculum programme of study, although we are not restricted to this. In Years 7 and 8 the teaching is integrated, and we follow the OUP Kerboodle course which we are currently adapting. From Year 9 we teach Science as three separate components of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, leading to (AQA) Science A and Additional Science GCSE’s or to three separate sciences. We intend to continue this with the equivalent offering in the new GCSEs in the future.  Currently almost a third of the year group attain the three separate science GCSEs with 100% A*-C.

Close cooperation within the Department allows us to make the necessary connections between the three sub-disciplines. In this way we aim to provide a balanced Science course. In addition to the GCSE Sciences, some pupils elect to study GCSE Astronomy as an evening class. An interest in taking on Astronomy as an After School Club (with or without GCSE) would be an advantage, but is not essential. We have our own telescope which can also be used.

A Level courses are offered in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Many pupils over the years have gone on to take Science and Engineering or Medicine related courses at University and some at Oxbridge.

The School

Founded in 1915, St Christopher School is an atypical independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 3-18.  We have 535 pupils and 65 full-time teachers.

We have no school uniform and everyone is called by their first name.  We have no religious affiliation and welcome students and staff of all faiths and none.

Our Ethos

We treat our young people as individuals and aim for them to develop competence and resourcefulness, social conscience and moral courage, the capacity for friendship and a true zest for life.

🌟Hello, and welcome to St Chris 🌟

St Chris was founded in 1915 to transform the way children experience school. Since then, we've redefined the way children learn, grow, and thrive in a world that's ever-changing. The flame of our progressive heritage still burns brightly in our outstanding modern school and, when you visit, you'll find that St Chris is still something unmistakably different from the moment you arrive.🌍

🎓 The Power of an Informal Approach 🎓

Our commitment to human connections and an informal approach sets us apart: our unshakable emphasis on knowing and believing in each child for who they are. We believe that humanity, understanding, kindness and 'progress' must be the pillars on which education - and childhood - should stand. The importance of learning by doing, of working as a team, of critical thinking, and of lifelong learning. This is education with a difference. 💬

🌳 Freedom to Learn🌳

In our learning, we are willing to give children something of which they are often deprived - time. Children do not all progress at the same time or the same speed. The skill of the teacher is to create a space in which progress can and will happen. Our stunning 25-acre campus, nestled just a short train ride from the bustling cities of London and Cambridge, supports this and provides a place of peace and calm for our students. 🏞️

Unashamedly honest with each other

There is no falsity here. No pretending. No inauthenticity. When you visit St Chris you will see us for who we are - dressed comfortably and as befits who each one of us is; not all made 'uniform'. You will hear us for who are; unquestioningly respectful, but Rich, Aziz or Li not 'sir', 'miss' or 'you there'. There are no unnecessary barriers to being yourself at St Chris. These things may seem small - they may even seem unusual - but they matter for what they mean. We're in this together.

💡 The St Chris Difference 💡

✅ Holistic Learning: Our approach nurtures not just academic excellence, but the creativity, character, and individuality of each student.

✅ Embracing Diversity: Our diverse student body enriches the learning experience and prepares students for a globalized world.

✅ Impressive Facilities: From our indoor swimming pool to a ceramics studio and photography darkroom, we provide a platform for students to explore their passions, whatever they are.
