Loretto School is a leading independent boarding and day school located on the outskirts of Edinburgh. We seek a Teacher of Physics for a full time permanent position, starting September 2024,  who is able to deliver the subject to GCSE and A-level. This position would be suitable for an NQT. The ability to teach General Sciences to Years 7,8 & 9 would be beneficial. This is a full time permanent position.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate Teacher of Physics, committed to the quality of learning and teaching and to providing an engaging and inspiring experience for the pupils. You will be a teacher who understands the importance of this role as well as the broader task of conveying interest and passion for the subject in the classroom. We are looking for a candidate with high expectations of students, who will maintain the high grades achieved in recent years while also promoting a love of the subject inside and outside the classroom. Recent shifts in practice mean that we are also looking for someone with an interest in using remote teaching methods to enhance learning and teaching.

The successful candidate is expected to possess the following qualities:

·        a passion for Physics and Science in general, and an ability to share this with pupils;

·        a high level of academic qualification in Physics;

·        the ability to plan, prepare and deliver creative and challenging lessons to all age groups, including practical aspects of the subject;

·        the confidence to use innovative teaching methods that enhance learning and teaching;

·        the creativity to produce resources which contribute to teaching and departmental development;

·        good organisational skills and punctuality;

·        willingness to work as part of a team and to share ideas with colleagues.

 

You will be required to teach Physics to GCSE and A-level (both AQA exam board) and, in addition, some KS3 Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). Prior experience of running a STEM programme and/or an Engineering Club would be beneficial, but is not required.

You will also be expected to be fully registered with the GTCS.

Loretto is a busy and vibrant boarding school and applicants should be excited about working in an environment where staff are fully committed in term time.  

 

Loretto operates for seven days a week in term time (with lessons Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings) and all members of staff have broader roles in the pastoral care of children and the extra-curricular life of the school. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be a tutor to around ten tutees and to undertake an evening duty in a boarding house once a week.

 

Loretto children are friendly, engaging and eager to learn. Musselburgh, on the eastern edge of Edinburgh, is a terrific location to work. The city with its rich culture is on the doorstep and the countryside and East Lothian coastline lie to the east.

 

This is a permanent, full time post with a required start date of September 2024. Loretto has its own salary scale and salary will be determined by experience and aptitude for the role.  There is a fee remission for staff with children at the School.

The opportunity for a residential position in one of the school boarding houses may also be available.

Interview Procedure

 

The procedure will involve an interview with the Assistant Head, an interview and lesson observation with the Head of Department, and an interview with the Headmaster.
