Job overview

The Physics department at JAGS is an outstanding place to work.

The Courses followed reflect modern developments in physics and its applications, as well as covering the core material of the subject. Physics provision at JAGS forms an excellent foundation for those that choose to study the subject further at university, as well as an interesting and challenging subject option for those who do not. Physics teaching from Year 7 is by subject specialists and all lessons take place in dedicated Physics laboratories with teachers making significant use of practical work.

The successful candidate will lead the department of five full-time Physics teaching staff, a full-time Physics technician and a part-time Science technician. There are four dedicated Physics laboratories, dark room provision, technicians’ preparation room and ample storage space.  The Head of Physics has an office at the heart of the department and Physics teachers are allocated desk space in an office shared with other members of the Science department. The Physics department is well equipped, having previously serviced the requirements of the Nuffield and Advancing Physics A-level courses as well as the current AQA Physics A course in the Sixth Form.  Department laptops are available for teaching and ICT suites are bookable with whole classes.  The department has modern datalogging equipment which is routinely used in practical work.

Physics is taught as a separate subject from Year 7 onwards and the GCSE syllabus is covered from Year 9. The AQA Physics Specification is followed. Typical class sizes are between 18 and 22 from Years 7 to 9, and between 15 and 20 in Years 10 and 11. At A-level, the new AQA Physics A specification is followed, with the Astrophysics option studied in Year 13.  Uptake at A-level is very good, with normally between 25-30 students taught in three classes. Results are outstanding and students frequently go on to study Physics, Engineering, Materials Science and other related courses at top universities each year, including at Oxbridge.
