Job overview

We are looking for an inspiring and energetic part-time teacher of Physics who is as passionate about developing their students as people as they are about their subject. As a teacher at Harris Westminster Sixth Form, you will join a dedicated and dynamic team of staff in supporting our fantastic students. The part-time percentage is negotiable (0.4 or 0.6).

For an informal chat about the role, you are invited to phone the school and speak with Claire Scott, Head of School. Research shows that some applicants are put off if they don't meet all criteria, especially women and people from a BAME background. We encourage and welcome any applicant who meets the majority of our criteria to apply.

About Us

Our school is one of the top sixth forms in the country, with the aim to deliver high quality education and outstanding outcomes to students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. HWSF is selective on both ability and disadvantage and places first academically able students from disadvantaged backgrounds. It is a wonderful school with an ethos of “learning is amazing”, where staff truly care about the progress their students make over their two years with us. We are based in the heart of Westminster, and work in collaboration with the Harris Federation and Westminster School. Our location gives us many benefits; we hold our assemblies in St Margaret's Church and Westminster Abbey, and we offer students weekly lectures from visiting speakers. Our examination results and student destinations (summer 2023: 49 students attended Oxbridge, 54% a Russell Group university) are outstanding and are testament to the hard work and commitment of our staff and students.

Main Areas of Responsibility

You will implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant, differentiated, and inspiring curriculum for students and support the subject area as appropriate. You will monitor and support the overall progress and development of students and provide a motivating and structured learning experience, which will provide students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential.

As a teacher and Form Tutor you will contribute significantly to raising standards of student attainment and support the process of application to university. You will contribute significantly to the Cultural Perspectives programme and to the wider life of the school, including extra-curricular and enrichment activities. You will report to the Head of Maths & Physics and liaise with other Physics and Maths teachers, Tutors, the Head of House, relevant teaching and non-teaching staff, including those with particular curriculum and pastoral responsibilities, parents and Governors and other stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience

We would like to hear from you if you have:

  • Good degree or equivalent in a relevant Physics subject.
  • QTS (or equivalent) or planning to join the Initial Teachers Education programme
  • Successful experience teaching A Level Physics at Sixth Form level (can be teaching practice).
  • Understanding of theory and practice of effective teaching and learning.
  • Understanding of how the most-able students learn.
  • Understanding of the importance of having high expectations for all students, both of behaviour and academic achievement.
  • Understanding of inclusive provision and practices which offer equality of access to the curriculum for all students, including special educational needs and English as an additional language.
  • Knowledge and experience of writing lesson plans, developing resources and assessing students' work.
  • Understanding the importance of being a Tutor.

School summary

Harris Westminster Sixth Form is a unique collaboration between two leading lights of UK education, the Harris Federation and Westminster School. Based in the heart of London, we combine the strengths of Westminster School in teaching academically able pupils with the Harris Federation’s experience in establishing and running outstanding maintained sector schools across London.

Harris Westminster Sixth Form opened in September 2014 with 138 students and since then has grown into a vibrant community of scholars with 600 students representing every borough of London and every conceivable ethnic and social group. 70% of students gain places at Russell Group universities with an increasing number securing Oxbridge destinations (nineteen in 2018 with thirty eight offers for 2019). The school is heavily oversubscribed with six applicants per place and students competing to join this enriching, supportive, and academically stretching environment.

Academy Ethos

Ambition. Perseverance. Legacy. After two years of outstanding education and personal development our students will not just be ready to face the world but to change it.

Ambition: Our students will have high expectations of themselves. They will believe in their own abilities and in their capacity to learn, developing new skills and knowledge. They will be unafraid of competition, seeking out new challenges and collaborating successfully to meet them. Their long term goals will be stretching and exciting and they will know how to take the next step on the road to meeting them.

Perseverance: Our students will understand the value of hard work and will be able to concentrate on medium and long term goals. They will not be dismayed by mistakes but will learn from them and seek opportunities to use their learning. They will use different approaches to solve problems and will not give up if they don’t succeed at the first attempt. They will encourage each other and accept encouragement: they will celebrate not just their own successes but those of their peers.

Legacy: Our students will have a strong moral code and a desire to help others.  They will understand the impact that their words and actions have and make their choices accordingly. They will learn about cultures and groups other than their own and will be interested in the ideas of others. They will have the courage to stand up for what is right even when it is difficult and leave enterprises of all kinds and scales better for their involvement.
