Job overview

Birkenhead School, founded in 1860, is an HMC independent day school providing education for boys and girls drawn from the whole of the Wirral and as far afield as Chester and North Wales. There are currently some 119 children in Early Years, 332 pupils in the School’s Prep, and 458 students in Years 7 to Upper Sixth Form. Birkenhead School has been fully co-educational since September 2008, offering the choice of an independent education to all local children.

Birkenhead School prides itself on being a family school and this has been greatly strengthened by the opening of the Nursery in 2006. It is very attractive to parents to have all their children in one school and it is a great advantage for the school to be able to establish strong, long-lasting relationships with families.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Reception and Key Stage 1 Teacher, with the energy, commitment, experience and skill to assist with the further development of a flourishing department. He or she can expect to join a school with a fine record of academic success, where pupils are co-operative and well motivated.

The incumbent will be required to teach and be responsible for the pastoral care of a Key Stage 1 class of mixed ability children, incorporating the full range of curriculum subjects, including Mathematics, English and Science to their class, as well as some Humanities and practical subjects, such as Art and DT as their timetable allows. They will also need to provide an attractive and stimulating environment within their classroom, in order to foster effective teaching and learning. They will be expected to supervise some playtimes and eat lunch with their class.

The department is well resourced with two School buildings, an outdoor classroom, outdoor learning areas and play areas. The School buildings are the Little School building, which houses Reception, Year 1 and Fun Club (used for Early Arrivals and After School Provision) and Old School House (formerly the Headmaster's house) which is just across the playground and is home to our Year 2 classes. It also houses an Art Room, a Reading Resource Room, Learning Support Rooms, Costume Store, Stock Room and our Little School Assembly Hall, where Music lessons and some other activities take place. Children in Little School also use the Prep Gym, the Prep ICT Room and the Prep Science Room.

We will value and support your contribution to School life and in return provide you with excellent rewards;

• Working with fantastic young pupils

• Working as part of a committed team

• Membership of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme

• Term time is 34 weeks

• Substantial discount on School fees for children of permanent staff attending the School

• Free use of the fully equipped on-site gym

• Support for your continuous professional development

• Provision of car parking within the School grounds

• Free lunch and refreshments during the school day

A letter of application indicating skills and experience, together with a completed application form, including the names and addresses of at least two referees, should be sent for the attention of the Head of Prep via: chw@birkenheadschool.co.uk.

The closing date for applications: 10.00am on Monday 6th April 2020

As part of our responsibility to safeguard children, the role is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check which will be requested prior to appointment.

Birkenhead School - one of the UK's top independent schools and Wirral's only selective, co-educational school.

As an HMC Independent School that welcomes children from Nursery to Sixth Form, we are aware of the considerable privilege in shaping the educational journey of children through their formative school years.

From Pre-Prep to Sixth Form, our focus is to know the individual, to develop their core values and to provide a breadth of academic and other opportunities so that we can nurture resilient, ambitious and responsible young men and women.  Rightly or wrongly, a school will often be judged by its academic results.  At Birkenhead School, we take a rigorous approach to academic study, achieving the highest grades, yet firmly believing that the path pupils take and the challenges they overcome are of equal importance.  We strive to create a learning environment where teachers have the freedom to teach and where pupils learn because they are inspired and curious - not merely to achieve good grades.  We aim to engender a mind-set to learn thoughout life.

With society placing ever increasing pressure on today's pupils, we educate in the broadest sense.  The best learners and contributers to School life, and thus the leaders of tomorrow, are those pupils who are  happiest.  We continue to place great importance on traditional values such as honesty, integrity and a strong moral compass that leads to a healthy, cohesive and aspirational community.

We take great pride in each pupil feeling known and valued within our community.  At Birkenhead School, we add further value at every step of this educational journey, driven by an extra-curricular programme whose scope and quality allows each individual to find their niche whether it lies in academia, sport, music, drama, service or leadership - to name but a few.  For staff to be able to further our pupils' passions, while working within such an inspirational and beautiful school site, is one of the great privileges of teaching at Birkenhead School, and of an independent education.
