Job overview

The Theology department in the senior school is led by Madeleine Ellert, the Head of Theology, who joined the College in September 2019. Under her leadership results have strongly improved, and Religious Studies is one of the most popular subjects to study at A-Level.

All students take the Religious Education long course at the end of Year 11 (Roman Catholic AQA specification). Those opting to study the subject at A-Level follow the OCR Philosophy, Ethics and Developments in Christian Thought specification.

The post is principally focused on Key Stages 3-4, but A-Level teaching may be available for a candidate with the relevant experience. There may be the opportunity to teach a second subject.

The Theology department plays a vital role in supporting the religious life of the College.

About Blanchelande College

About Blanchelande College

Blanchelande College is a co-educational Catholic independent school for boys and girls from age 2 ½ to 18 in Guernsey, the Channel Islands. Following the opening of a new Sixth Form in September 2020, and a new Nursery in September 2021, and rapid growth since 2016, the College currently educates 460 pupils. Blanchelande’s Catholic mission and identity, understood and supported by all staff, are at the heart of school life. Approximately one third of students and staff are Catholic, demonstrating our inclusive and welcoming ethos. Blanchelande is Guernsey’s only independent Catholic school and is situated in the parish of St Andrews, within the stunning Les Vauxbelets rural estate.

Blanchelande has a one-form structure from Nursery and Reception to Year 4, with room for two forms in Years 5 and 6, and for three forms in the senior school (Years 7-11). Classes sizes are typically around twenty. Sixth Form cohorts are smaller, enabling students to benefit from seminar-style A-Level teaching, a superb preparation for university.

Values and Vision

Founded in 1902, Blanchelande is a Catholic school rooted in love of God and service to neighbour. The College educates over 460 boys and girls of a range of backgrounds and beliefs, from Nursery to Year 13. The school offers an excellent academic and co-curricular education which fosters joyful, confident and successful pupils. In its 2018 ISI inspection the College was rated ‘excellent’ for both pupil achievement and pupil development.
