Job overview

Teacher of Religious Studies (0.8 - 1fte)

Required for September 2019, an enthusiastic graduate or experienced Teacher of RS to support the work of Catholic education and the religious life of the school.

St Augustine’s Catholic College is a thriving 11-18 secondary school located in Trowbridge (12 miles from the World Heritage City of Bath) and has been graded “outstanding” by Ofsted since 2007. The college community of 971 students is vibrant and happy.  Students of all abilities are encouraged to aim high and work hard in a supportive environment that ensures that all can fulfil their potential. St Augustine’s is a traditional school with Christian values at its heart. The pastoral care our students receive is exemplary and ensures that they are supported, cared for and valued. All staff are expected to support the Catholic and pastoral ethos of the College.

St Augustine’s has been placed in the top 10% of non-selective schools nationally for both attainment and progress at KS4. We have an equally impressive tradition at A Level. This year 63% of grades were A*-C, and we have a strong record of accomplishment of students accessing their first choice of university in both the UK and USA. St Augustine’s prides itself in providing an outstanding academic education and also offers a wide range of enrichment and extra-curricular opportunities for students, developing skills and qualities in leadership, self-reliance and independence

The Religious Studies department is central to all life at St Augustine’s and aims to deliver a high standard of academic RS through supporting and empowering students to be the best they can be. At Key Stages 3 and 4 students receive 10% of curriculum time and at Key Stage 5 students receive 5% of curriculum time studying General RS. As a department we have close links with our feeder primary schools, diocesan secondary schools and the Clifton Diocesan Department for Schools and Colleges.

Our Religious Studies department aims to encourage each pupil to gain knowledge and understanding of what it means to be a Catholic Christian, to understand and appreciate the views and beliefs of other Christian communities and world faiths. Through Religious Studies, and with the close liaison with the college chaplain, students are encouraged to embark on a journey that will lead them to a clear and reasoned awareness of their own beliefs while helping them to understand that being a positive member of society means being able to respect and understand the beliefs and values of others. The Religious Studies department is supported in this work by all department areas throughout the college.

In Key Stage 3 students study a course based on the Catholic RE national curriculum entitled ‘People of God’. This is underpinned by the Religious Education Curriculum Directory for Catholic schools.  In Key Stage 4 all students study for the full GCSE course. Our students achieve outstanding results, with 84% of our students gaining grades 9-4 in 2018 and we currently study Eduquas route B GCSE.

At A Level we currently offer Eduqas Religious Studies through the Philosophy, Ethics and Theology course and once again our students achieve pleasing results.

If you are passionate about your subject and have a strong desire to make a difference to young peoples’ lives, whilst fulfilling your own potential, then we would love to hear from you. The deadline for applications is noon on Wednesday, 20th March 2019.  Please send your application to Sarah Priest, HR Manager, at priests@sta.cc

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. References will be requested before interviews take place and you will be required to bring your identification documents with you on the day of the interview.  We are an Equal Opportunities Employer.
