Job overview

St Gregory’s Catholic High School is looking to appoint a Teacher of Science with an enhanced TLR responsibility due to the continuing expansion of our school which will be complete in September 2022.  All core subject areas of the school are in continual expansion and we have recently appointed additional TLR holders in Maths and English too which will strategically support the growth in pupil numbers.

The TLR opportunity will enable you to lead a ‘mini subject area’ in Science consisting of 2 year groups (Years 7 and 8) and whilst the head of department assumes overall responsibility, you will be able to develop your future ambitions for both subject and senior leadership positions.

You will be joined at Science subject leadership level by two additional TLR holders, one of whom will be responsible for Years 9 and 10 and the subject leader who will lead on Year 11 and the overall department as a whole.

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School is one of the highest performing schools in Warrington and the Liverpool Archdiocese for pupil progress measures. The school is well oversubscribed with a waiting list for pupil admissions.

In our January 2020 Ofsted report, Ofsted graded the school as ‘Good’ in every area under the new framework and the school has been graded as ‘Outstanding’ in the Section 48 Inspection of Catholic Life provision.

The opening paragraph from the Ofsted report reads: “Pupils at St Gregory’s are confident and welcoming to visitors, they like each other”. There is a strong sense of community across the school which reflects the school vision. One pupil said “we are cared about as individuals, but because everyone cares, that makes us all one”

This is an excellent opportunity for an outstanding and effective practitioner who has the desire to continue to raise standards across a successful Science department. The successful candidate will be passionate about science and will be personally driven to ensure that every child achieves and makes good progress.  We want to appoint people with a strong commitment to young people.

The successful candidate would become part of a dynamic team of subject specialists who strive to provide the best learning experience for pupils through high expectations, inspirational teaching and personalised support.  Achievement in the department is excellent and GCSE results are above national in all areas.

In Years 7 and 8, pupils follow a science curriculum that focuses on skills and content that will prepare them well for the demands of GCSE, this has been developed in-house based on the Collins Key stage 3 scheme of work. Year 9 pupils begin to follow the GCSE curriculum in the summer term and Years 10 and 11 pupils study the ‘AQA Combined Science Trilogy’ course or AQA separate sciences. All Year 10 and 11 pupils are taught by 3 subject specialists. In Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils receive 6 hours of Science per fortnight, pupils in Year 10 and 11 receive 9 hours teaching per fortnight.

The department consists of 7 full-time teachers, 2 part-time teachers, 2 members of the senior leadership team and 1 technician. Science teaching takes place in eight large laboratories which are well resourced by a central prep room and two of them are housed in our new STEM building which both have smaller prep areas attached.

Values and vision

The mission statement of St Gregory’s reads: “This is our God, the servant King. He calls us now to follow him.” The school’s prayer is: “Inspire us to build a community based on love and respect. May we be empowered to challenge injustice every day. Help us to value and support each other to create a positive Learning environment where all may serve. Amen.”

The staff, parents, governors and students of St. Gregory’s Catholic High School aim to work in partnership to create a vibrant community in which all are valued. At the core of school life is a belief that there is no better inspiration than the example and teaching of Jesus Christ.

The school community seeks to set an example of service, inspired by Jesus, and in doing so fulfil the aspirations that it has for each of its pupils, and to foster their spiritual, academic and personal development.

Ofsted

“Across the school there are examples of good and sometimes outstanding teaching. Many students are eager to learn and have aspirations to excel in their studies and in the contribution they make to school life.”

“The school represents a safe, caring and responsive community. Governance is strong and effective."
